Command Prompt Screen occasionally flashes on screen

Hello Sysnative, I used to post here as dee_can (Vista computer), but when I try to log on and have a new password sent, I get an error screen. So, I've re-registered as 'imback'. I now have a new laptop with Windows 10 and recently updated to the Creators update. I'm not saying this is causing the issue, however. I'm also guilty of occasionally doing the quizzes on facebook, so that might be an issue. The last couple of days I'm seeing a command prompt screen that quickly flashes on then off. I can't see what it says, that's how fast it happens. I googled and thought it might be malware so I ran Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. My computer also runs Windows Defender. The malware programs only showed cookies, as usual. I just wanted to know if this is something to worry about, and what I should do. Thanks.

Hi, thank you for helping me. I just wanted to let you know that I'm working on it but trying to get past the log in as Admin stage. ha I right-click and the last item on my clipboard appears, so I'm trying to clear the clipboard. Will be back though, didn't want you to think I disappeared.

    Hi,

What error are you seeing? Would you be able to send a screenshot or copy the error message into your next post?

In regards to your issue, do you have Microsoft Office installed? If so, I think this is a known issue related to Office. See here: Tip: Kill Those Suspicious Pop-Up Windows - Thurrott.com. In the microsoft answer thread, it states the issue is fixed in an upcoming version of Office:

This issue is fixed starting with build 16.0.8201.2025

writhziden and satrow say thanks for this.

Command Prompt Screen occasionally flashes on screen-screenshot-37-jpgYes, I have Microsoft Office 2016 on this 1.5 yr old computer. Have only had the flashing command prompt screen for a couple of days, though. Here is a photo of the error I get when I try to ask for a new password... (it might be above my message).

OK, I got to the point where I have a clean boot environment, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for to tell me which program causes the flashing CMD screen. I'll just keep the computer like this for now until I hear your response - thanks.

Re: Command Prompt Screen occasionally flashes on screen

    From the site I linked:
How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot

    Hide all
    Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8
    1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    2. From Start, search for msconfig. (In Windows 10, use the Search box from the Start menu. In Windows 8 or 8.1, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)
    3. Select msconfig or System Configuration from the search results.
    4. Tap or click the Services tab, and then tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
    5. Tap or click to select the upper half of the check boxes in the Service list.
    6. Tap or click OK, and then tap or click Restart.
    7. After the computer finishes restarting, determine whether the problem still occurs.
      • If the problem still occurs, repeat steps 1 through 6, but clear the lower half of the check boxes in the Service list that you originally selected.
      • If the problem does not occur, repeat steps 1 through 6, and select only the upper half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
      • If you still experience the problem when only one service is selected in the Service list, this means that the selected service causes the problem, and you should go to step 11. If no service causes the problem, go to step 8.

    8. Repeat steps 1 and 3 in this section.
    9. Tap or click the Startup tab, and then tap or click to select the upper half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list.
    10. Click OK, and then click Restart.
      • If the problem still occurs, repeat steps 8 and 9, but clear the lower half of the checked boxes in the Startup Item list that you originally selected.
      • If the problem does not occur, repeat steps 8 and 9, and select only the upper half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
      • If you still experience the problem after only one Startup Item is selected in the Startup Item list, this means that the selected Startup Item causes the problem, and you should go to step 11. If no Startup Item causes this problem, a Microsoft service probably causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat steps 1 through 7 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in each step.

    11. After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then tap or click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Re: Command Prompt Screen occasionally flashes on screen

Just an update. Last night I decided to put everything back to pre-clean-boot environment before shutting my computer down for the day. I've been back on the computer today for a couple of hours, and I haven't seen the flashing command prompt screen... so, maybe the issue is resolved? I'll watch for it, and if it happens again I'll re-do the whole procedure and report back. I was worried that it might have been malware, so I wanted to check here to make sure it wasn't that. Thank you again writhziden.

Re: Command Prompt Screen occasionally flashes on screen

Hi, I just wanted to post back since it's been a few days since I posted about the problem I was having. I haven't seen one flashing command prompt screen since I did the clean boot and re-renabled the programs and services. So, maybe just by doing that it cleared up the issue. Hopefully that is it, and I won't have the problem anymore. So thanks again for your help.
    writhziden says thanks for this.
