Can't resolve multiple duplicate (Cortana related) ID 10016 Win Event Viewer entries

    Hi,

Ever since I clean installed Window 10 Pro (x64) Release Updated later to TH2 (current Version is 1511 (OS Build 10586.494) I have been plagued with ID 10016 entries in my Windows Event Viewer. Now ONLY one relating to Cortana remains and keeps reoccurring.

When I start up Windows and log in I either have No ID 10016 errors, or more often I have around 20 to 50. As you can see from image below I have 475 (the highest I have seen. No idea if a sfc /scannow in a session immediately before I shut down PC and rebooted had anything to do with the high number. (UPDATE: I have just shut down PC and rebooted. This time there are only 8 ID10016 Cortana related duplicate entries)

    Attachment 21715

I have followed the most popular recommend fix(es) by adding/adjusting permissions in Immersive Shell. NONE of the variations suggested to permissions work.

As far as I am aware these entries are not affecting my PC in any way.

    Extra Info:
    1) I have noted the Errors only occur at login AND are much less likely to occur if I shut down PC (and restart) or just restart (without shutting down) a few minutes later. (no idea if a Red herring or not). Obviously the ADSL Wired Router is not switched off in between, on these occasions. (I always switch off PC and modem when I stop using PC completely and will not be back for a while or next day. I never leave PC running overnight or when not being used.

    2) I live in a country that Cortana cannot be use in and I do not want to use it anyway. I have DISABLED Cortana via Local Group Policy Editor.

    3) May be a red herring but I do not wish to use OneDrive or cloud storage so I have no need of it. I decided to remove in completely from my setup . I followed
How to Uninstall OneDrive completely in Windows 10 ? here are the - Microsoft Community

I'm hoping someone knows how to fix this annoyance once and for all.

Oops sorry about that everybody. Thanks for telling me xilolee.
I just went to copy today's Window Events and (of course there are no ID 10116 events this time for me to copy a new image.

Fortunately I have tried fixes recommended online in the past for this issue and I record the messages and all changes to my PC in between Aomei backups in a Word file for future reference and for f I need to go back to a previous backup I know what to redo.

This is the ID 10016 message I see currently duplicated every time

Re: Can't resolve multiple duplicate (Cortana related) ID 10016 Win Event Viewer entr

I am experiencing the same issue.
Performed all steps usually required to solve the COM 10016 Event ID's. (get control over CLSID and APP ID, then use component services to grant permissions).
I made sure that registry permissions are for folder and sub keys and then slowly started granting more and more launch permissions. This does not seem to help.

I was able to solve all other COM 10016 Event ID's, for other components, this way. Only Immersive Shell keeps creating those events.
Anybody out there who was able to solve this?

Re: Can't resolve multiple duplicate (Cortana related) ID 10016 Win Event Viewer entr

    Hi all

The odd part about some of the 10016 permission errors is that they seem to have a tendency to recur (even after manually adjusting the permissions and such using Component Services) .... My guess is that the never-ending stream of Windows Updates can end up re-adjusting things while installing the patches. I see a similar error on one of my Windows 10 laptops every once and a while ... and I have Cortana set to "Off" [so I actually don't worry about nonsensical Event Viewer madness concerning a feature that's actually turned off]. Really really really tired of the permissions snafus in Windows 10 . . . seems like sloppy programming work (though I'm open to other causes as well).

If you aren't using Cortana, I imagine it shouldn't hurt to ignore the "errors" --- unless they produce some sort of misbehavior on your computer. I don't see any effects one way or the other on the few systems that I've worked on - that have the permissions errors for "Universal" ("Metro", "Windows 8 style"..) apps.

It will be interesting to see how the August 2nd release of the Windows 10 Anniversary update affects our Event Viewer logs..... Fireworks, maybe?

I agree with all you say OldGrayGary. I too have Cortana disabled (two reasons: not available in my area at release and, I don't need or want it). The multiple duplicated Errors have never caused me any issues. 0, or often 30 to 300 identical Events at logon, are however very annoying and hinder me from seeing "the wood from the trees" I am sure its a MS issue, maybe partly affected caused by Cortana not being enabled (or could telemetry blocking some many users have added to their Host file (or whatever). Whatever the cause the fact it these event do not always appear (and only at logon for most) IMO should give enough clues to MS Coders what the issue it and how to resolve.

IMHO too many software authors (corporate or small) seem theses days to want to move on fast with new features before resolving the more much reported existing issues first (this I feel betrays those who supported then by putting their faith into purchased or upgrading with THEIR products. In Microsoft's case details information on Windows 10 updates are very poor compared to those provided when I used Windows 7, where update reasons and details were readily supplied at update time including whether Critical, important or optional.

Whatever the reason its really annoying MS do not appear to deal with much reported issues very quickly. Maybe it should pay much more attention to its Microsoft Community. After all, MS has yet to fix the TH2 created regedit.exe issue where searching and finding a very long path will cause the search to freeze. After all this time, it is ludicrous that users who view the registry still have to insert the older smaller (1st release) WORKING regedit.exe to get it to work as intended or, to have to use a 3rd party Registry editor (of course SFC /scannow unfixes the workaround every time its run).

Why has MS not resolved the MUCH reported issue of mouse and keyboard random freezing that seems to plague so many users It does seems mostly an issue with Asus motherboards).
I was lucky it was infrequent and only at logon (VERY ANNOYING though as NEVER happened in years of using Win Xp and Win 7 Ultimate (X64). Some reported they had found Asus AI Suite AIcharger+ to blame. I did not have that installed. In my case (as I have not seen the issue for 3 months on my PC) it was me needing to disable my Asus Motherboard's Bios USB 2.0 Legacy Support (a workaround also suggested by some). I am sure MS could have resolved this by now for most Users. No excuse for Asus either who in one whole year have not bothered to produce ANY Windows 10 drivers for most of their Motherboards - very poor on their part)

As you say OldGrayGary "It will be interesting to see how the August 2nd release of the Windows 10 Anniversary update affects our Event Viewer logs..... Fireworks, maybe?". I'm certainly not holding my breath. In fact my system is very stable and I worry what new issues, the new features, Microsoft feel we all will appreciate, will cause.

I hadn't seen the USB 2.0 Legacy Support disable solution before ... clever workaround! (Sad that it has to be done, though)....

We can swap stories on August 3rd, after the Microsoft "show" :)
