PPTP Virtual Private Network (VPN) Will not connect

    Hi,

I occasionally used a VPN for browsing on my machine when I had Windows 7 x64 Pro. It was easy to setup and worked well. I recently tried to set it up again after my Windows 10 upgrade without any luck. I am using a VPN with a PPTP protocol and when I try and connect I instantly get the message below.

Also in my event viewer I get the message : "CoId={3C9B2130-AC37-4BE7-A244-2F93B993A418}: The user DESKTOP-5D0TI5E\Scott dialed a connection named USA VPN which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 807."

I have fought with this for quite a few hours and am stumped. I have turned off my firewall and antivirus. I have tried a few other VPN's and I get the same error message as soon as I try and connect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi scottmandu,

Are you able to ping the servers you're trying to connect to? Has anything else in your environment changed since the last time you were able to connect, like your modem/router? Typically when I've seen 807 errors, it's been a NAT related issue, where packets on port 1723 (the well-known port for PPTP) are being dropped. If you're able to ping the servers you're connecting to, then you should try port-forwarding 1723 (TCP) on your router, restart the router, and see if you're able to connect then.

    Hi jcgriff2 and Xer,

    Thanks for the suggestions.

jcgriff2....I went through all suggested links and haven't been able to connect.

Xer....I can ping the servers I am trying to connect to. I went into my router and port forwarded 1723 (TCP), and reset my router, but immediately after I try and connect I get the same message "Can't connect". Not sure what else to try?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, have you tried any third-party tunneling clients like SoftEther, or even a freemium client like TunnelBear (where you're connecting to their servers)? The error you're getting suggests a networking issue, but the circumstances of it suddenly breaking after upgrading to Windows 10 seems more like it could just be a resulting issue from the upgrade process. Normally if it's an issue with the built-in VPN functionality though, you would get an error related to the VPN service itself.

If you are able to connect with a third-party client, you could try backing up/making a restore point, and then running the 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth' command from an elevated Command Prompt and see if it's able to repair the built-in VPN functionality.

I tried as you suggested and it now seems to be working.
    Xer says thanks for this.
