sfc /scannow reports error

After my PC ran into several bluescreens in a row after restarting Windows, I ran chkdsk on all drives (which fixed some index file issues as well as restored some rather old internet explorer cache files), I checked the event viewer and realized that there are several reported errors at startup. Two of these being:

Failed with 0x490 modifying AppModel Runtime status for package Microsoft.Reader_6.4.9926.18228_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe for user Kenju-PC\Kenju (current status = 0x0, desired status = 0x20).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070003: Reader.

Running sfc /scannow to attempt to fix the issues, it stopped at 41% reporting: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." The CBS.log file contains the following error

Trying to get that issue resolved using sfcfix, that also failed and reported the following log:

Any idea how to resolve the sfc-issue and maybe also the eventlog-error?

Note that I also realized that some Apps (like the calculator) doesn't work anymore. Looking at the Windows startmenu I see a list of weird entries at the bottom under the section "Other" which seem to be the Windows default apps. For instance: "@{Microsoft.3DBuilder_10.10.38.0......."

Hi Kenju

The fact that you are having errors serious enough to crash the system ("BSODs", "Blue Screen of Death errors", aka STOP errors), and that the files are again corrupted even though they were just cleaned/replaced six weeks ago or so --- is worrisome.

Have you run diagnostics on your computer's hardware to rule out any faulty hardware situation? If your computer has built-in diagnostics, those are a good place to start. Some manufacturers have them available by pressing a special function key at system power-on - check the user manual for your model. I recommend testing the memory fairly extensively (for several hours, or overnight) using MemTest86+, and testing your hard drives using diagnostics from the manufacturer's website for each drive. You can find MemTest86+ among the free tools on the free utility CD called "UBCD" - a reliable, bootable Linux-based diagnostic CD. It also has some hard drive diagnostics, but some are a bit dated. Ultimate Boot CD - Overview If you have an SSD, try to visit the manufacturer's website for the diagnostic for your drive.

If all your hardware passes diagnostics, then you'll have to decide where you want to proceed with your problem solving. Since you are receiving errors serious enough to crash your machine, the BSOD forum here might be a good choice, since they specialize in STOP error analysis. Your troubles with Windows Updates and system files received extensive help from the Windows Update forum, you have the option to try them for another round of repair. Or, you can come back here, and we'll have a go.

See how the diagnostics turn out, and let us know.

[P.S. ... how old is the system ... any trouble when you were using Windows 8.1?]

[another late edit ... Also see if you can boot the PC with a "Rescue CD" containing an antivirus program (AVG, Avira, and Avast all have "Rescue CDs" that can be created and run). Scan using the highest (most thorough) settings. Just to make sure malware isn't a factor]

Type Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command into Command Prompt. After Dism command finish execute Sfc /Scannow command to make sure all damage Windows system files are repaired.

The Other category is result of you running powershell command that reinstalls all Windows 10 default apps but with Windows 10 version 10.0.10586 build there is a issue with installing all default apps with powershell command and the result of the issue is some apps wont work and those don't work place under Other category.
I just notice i double post but nothing i can do as i have no idea how to delete my posts.

@OldGrayGary: Thanks for your reply. I take it your advice to simply reinstall the whole system is the best way to go and simply pushes me a bit to no longer postpone that (since I had that planned for over a year already). The system is rather old (originally installed around 2009 using Windows 7, then upgraded to Win7SP1 -> Win8 -> Win8.1 -> Win10 -> Win10 1115).
Since setting up the machine takes quite some time, I normally try to sync that together with a whole hardware upgrade but being somehow a saving personality, I tend to use my electronics as long as feasible. :)

Regardless, I also believe that the underlying issue is some hardware problem, since the BSODs had been happening ever since I put the machine together. They (the BSODs) are however still rare enough that they didn't bother me too much and testing the machine didn't give a trace which part might cause the problem (running chkdsk, MemTest86+, MS' built in memory test tool, and Avast's full boot time scan didn't show up a lead to the problem, leaving me with little possibilities to trace down the root cause without investing some money).

So as said: Thanks for your reply. I think I'd simply reinstall the machine in the very near future.

@FreeBooter: Thanks for the hints. I assumed SFCFix triggers the dism-tool itself, when it deems it to be required. Regardless, I've just started Dism again manually and that one got stuck with the expected error 1392. As already replied to OldGrayGary, I'll simply reinstall my system and ignore the issue for the time being. Thanks anyway.

You can repair install Windows 10 you don't need to clean install to resolve this issue. Repair install of Windows 10 will not touch your settings, applications you installed and your personal files.

Good suggestion FreeBooter, but as stated for my machine I think it's basically overdue for a fresh and clean system installation. If it would be other symptoms than the broken Windows apps or the eventviewer errors I see, I'd certainly think about doing a repair installation.
