Hi - thank you for the answers!
It sounds that, to some extent, the in-place re-install was successful. When the login screen appears, is there only one user? And does it require a password?
If the answers to both of those last two questions are "yes", then your friend can try the four-step instructions for having Windows automatically enter his passwords for him, and not to ask for passwords after "waking" from "sleep" or "hibernation".
Here are those steps again (1-AutoLogon 2-ScreenSaver Power Options 3-ScreenSaver Personalization 4-Account sign-in options)

If the system has any unexpected trouble with performance, or any programs don't work, or any error messages appear, let us know.
Note: there may be some initial considerable slowness when starting/stopping the computer for the next few restarts... the computer may need to reinstall quite a few Windows Updates because of the recent repairs. I would expect that slowness to disappear (or at least improve) after three or four restarts.
Good luck!
