Windows 10 waking on sleep/lid closed

Since switching to Windows 10, I've noticed that at some point during the night my laptop is waking from sleep, whilst the lid is closed.

It's also no longer requiring a password to wake from sleep, but requires it every time I lock the computer.

    Any ideas?

After it happens again from a elevated cmd prompt type powercfg /LASTWAKE that will tell you what woke it up last.

    Wake Source - Power button.

I'm not 100% sure it woke up on it's own this time though. I'll try again in the morning if it's back on and see if it says anything different. I didn't press the power button this time, but I'm not sure if it was already on before I opened the lid.

Do you have TeamViewer installed? Make sure it's fully updated, I spotted something interesting in their release notes:

    Version 10.0.45862

    • Fixed a bug that caused TeamViewer to periodically wake up Windows from standby
    • Fixed a problem where sometimes wrong scaling settings were used during a remote session
    • Minor improvements and fixes

Still waiting for the KB article to be published, but another Cumulative Update for Windows 10 has been released. (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3081438) This provide an opportunity to test the WU restart.

    TeamViewer not installed.

Just had a look through the ReportingEvents log - I'm seeing WU events logged happening around 3.30am. They may be being triggered after the restart/wake though.

WSAutoUpdate Success Software Synchronization Windows Update Client successfully detected 0 updates.

Every time I've pulled out the plug, after turning on the laptop again it has tried to install updates - that could just be a coincidence though, especially as I don't restart that regularly.

That event viewer message obviously refers to Windows Updates.

Any place to change the time for Windows Update check?

I think it's actually carrying out a full restart, not just waking. After running the command suggested earlier, I get "Wake History Count - 0".

Re: Windows 10 waking on sleep/lid closed

    Anyone able to help?

Just happened again, this time got a log pointing more conclusively to Windows Update:

    Owner: [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (SystemEventsBroker)
Owner Supplied Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator\Reboot' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.

Surely there must be a better solution - if I disable automatic updates they'll probably be installed once every 6 months.

Anyone able to confirm this is Windows Update? Anywhere to report this to MS?

So what is your Windows Update set to?

I have mine set to "Notify to Schedule Restart".

Ah, maybe that'll solve it. I've just switched it to notify instead.

Still waking with the lid closed - notify just annoys me by insisting it wants to restart at the main times of day I use my computer. Glad Windows 10 is so great at learning when the best time to restart is.

Anyone able to confirm this is Windows Update? Anywhere to report this to MS?

The formal place to do this is the feedback app. If you can create a list of steps required to reproduce this bug then that always helps. Otherwise, nope - this isn't a bug.

However, I have a workaround. You said it was this take: 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator\Reboot'

Therefore, find that task in Task Scheduler and uncheck "wake this computer to run this task"

Re: Windows 10 waking on sleep/lid closed

I'm thinking about this from a programming prospective here. It's not a bug in my eyes, this appears to be something working as intended.

The task that controls Windows Update is waking the computer - exactly as it has been told to do inside of task scheduler. Whilst this feature may not be desirable, IMO it's not a bug.

If you could produce a list of steps that should produce one outcome and produces another, then we're looking at a bug. For example, when clicking the properties button on a VPN's IPv4 setting the properties dialogue should appear. In Windows 10, this window does not appear. This is a bug since an intended feature is not working as it is meant to (and this is an actual bug in W10 that is really irritating me!)

(I welcome alternative views [but don't want to argue] on this - just my opinion)

Regardless of your stance on whether or no waking a closed lid laptop is a bug, (which MS would probably agree with me on this one), it still bypasses a security feature and allows access to my laptop without typing in the password.

It's not the users responsibilty to produce a complete list of steps for something to be regarded as a bug - a BSOD is also a bug, but the OS is so complicated it's incredibly hard to work out the full circumstances.
