OS: Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
Last Successful CU Installed: 2024-04 (KB5036909)

Description:
This is a Hyper-V host in a cluster which started to have problems back in around February time. It wasn't talking to the other host in the cluster and storage was out of sync. We managed to resolve this issue but had to roll back the 2024-03 CU update to resolve this. We did this on both hosts servers and the cluster was restored. When 2024-04 was released we installed this on both hosts and it appears both installed. Or at least we thought so. Since then however this one host hasn't installed another CU update. The other host is installing them without issue.

Windows Update gives the error 0x80073701. I've run a number of things to try and resolve this, SFC, DISM etc. I've also tried to install past CU updates including 2024-04 again (As it's showing as installed) but each time it fails to install. I suspect 2024-04 wasn't installed correctly which is what has caused this.

SFC and DISM finds no issues. Other updates are installing without issue.

The server can be rebuilt, but I thought I'd try posting the logs here first to see if I'm missed an easy fix for this to get it updating again.

I cleared the main CBS log before trying to install 2024-07 today, but a backup of the CBS contents in included in the CBS zip below.

Let me know if you need more information, happy to provide. I've got around a week until I need to re-image the server to keep within the maintenance window for this system.

Thank you,
Rob

Hi,

Would anyone be able to take a look at this? The maintenance window is a bit longer now so if we can fix it, that would be good. Save a load of work to re-image the server and setup again.

Cheers,
Rob

I think I'm all sorted now. Managed to run an 'In Place Upgrade' from WS2022 to WS2022. Paused the Node in the Cluster first, made sure everything was drained from it. Storage sync was paused etc. Then ran the 'upgrade' from Windows, picking 'Keep apps and settings'. Once it had all completed, I checked windows was looking correct (Updates, Cluster, apps etc). Then un--paused the node and waited for it to all sync back up.

I can't be sure it will be this easy for others mind, but worked for me.

Hi,

I'm glad to hear you managed to resolve this issue with an In-Place-Upgrade.
