WS2016 - Error: 14098 The component store has been corrupted

Hi,

Im not sure if I must do a new install...
I was trying installing Net Framework 4.8 and the installation reported me an error, so I decided to use SFC /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and it reported me "Error: 14098 The component store has been corrupted"
I attach CBS and DISM logs and Componentscanner.txt

Do you have recent backups of this server and particularly the COMPONENTS hive which is stored here C:\Windows\System32\Config
 
Do you have a very similar server 2016, with the same Language Packs, Features etc. installed?
 
Please provide a copy of the corrupted COMPONENTS hive from this server as well as a copy from a similar server.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

What you can try is the following:
1. Make a complete image of the problamtic server.
2. Replace the corrupted COMPONENTS hive with the copy from the similiar server.
3. Perform an in-place-upgrade with the Server 2016 ISO.

In-place upgrade Server 2016
  • Mount the Windows Server ISO and run Setup.exe.
  • Use the option Download and install updates, drivers (recommended) and click Next.
  • In the next screen select the image you want to install.

  • Depending on your Windows Server version and license, you may see a screen prompting you to enter the licensing key.
  • Then accept the EULA. To perform a in-place upgrade, you need to check keep personal files and apps. Then click Next.

  • After clicking Next, an upgrade process will start checking for updates, when this is ready click install to start the in-place upgrade.
 
Hi, it doesnt work.
I cant install keeping everything, installer doesnt give me that choice.
I have to do a new one.

That is unfortunate, but good luck with rebuilding this server. And don't forget to make frequently backups to avoid such issues in the future... ;) (y)
