A clean install of Win Vista starter-SP2-32 bit was made. Windows Update kept searching for updates for hours. Then, manually installed --

KB3078601

KB3109094

KB3185911

KB3191203

KB3198234

KB3203859

And Windows Update started to pick up updates.
After all the updates were done, Win Update showed the following updates---

KB4014984

KB3210142

KB3195382

KB3188744

KB3179949

KB3136000

KB3142037

KB3143693

KB3164025

---- as failed with error - 800B0109. Had to set aside these updates as Hidden (not to be installed).

Upon closer look in Microsoft Update Catalog, we see that these updates are more about server updates. My PC is 6.0.6002. It is not server machine.

The question is - Why did Windows Update pick up these updates when it cannot install it?

And yes, I did not go for Win Defender or MSE or Essentials Live.

The PC works well without these updates.

My hunch is -- these are server updates and not PC updates.
Something wrong in classification of updates by MS or it has something to do with anti-virus.

But if PC works okay... its okay!

No problem!!!!

Note - This post is just for information only ... in case some user has also gone through similar hick-ups... and found something or has some view on it.
It can be closed as Resolved after marked as Read. ( .. if there is nothing further on it).

So then the question is --- Why the machine is not accepting it?
What can be done is -- Trial & Error!
Manually install these updates.
And what do you see -- A blank Installed Updates view in Program & Features.
Run SURT - October 2014 for Vista and take a look at checkSUR.log
Then what do you see - The very same manually installed updates are thrown out by Computer.
Then do the correction/repair as per --
Fix for Blank or Empty Windows Features List in Vista and 7 • Raymond.CC
And Hey Presto! Installed Updates View gets populated... and it is without these "wrong" updates...rather these wrong updates got removed completely. No leftovers.
So now -- what are we to conclude from this -- if the computer works .... it is okay..without these updates.... its much better.
Or there is something more to it?
Say, for example -- Windows Defender is not only Turned Off but removed.
MSE does not get installed..... etc.

Its Vista! It still works! Never give up!

For the moment, these "wrong updates" are set aside as Restore Hidden Updates in Win Updates.

One thing can be noted - These are all .net framework 4.6 updates.
So what can be done - Re-install .Net Fr 4.6 and then check.

I will be back !

All those updates are applicable to Windows Vista, I would recommend that you install them.

I take your word on that ... but the machine must accept those updates.

After re-installing Dot Net Fr 4.6, attempted to install those updates via Windows Update but getting error 800B0109.

On a clean OS install, getting such an error... What could it be? A virus/malware or a software-conflict? I hope it is not any kind of Hardware issue!!

Further trying to follow the procedure as given in --
Windows Update 800B0109 Error Code Removal (April 2020 Update)

I shall be back in 2 days ....

There is very likely issues with the digital certificate used to sign some of the package files, more specifically, the issuing authority isn't trusted anymore. I would suggest that you follow these posting instructions - Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions, so a member of the WU can assist you.

However, I suspect that it may be time to upgrade to a newer operating system.

Possible but the error code is 800B0109 and not 0x800B0100 (TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE)

Possible but the error code is 800B0109 and not 0x800B0100 (TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE)

I know, I didn't say it was 0x800B0100. The error code for 0x800B0109 is CERT_E_UNTRUSTEDROOT, the documentation states the following:

A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate that is not trusted by the trust provider.

[MS-ERREF]: Windows Error Codes

Anyhow, I'll let one of the WU team assist you in this matter.

Meanwhile, I looked into EventView logs to see if anything can be seen -- I found something tallying with your line of thought/action for repairs --

-------- Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: <http://ctldl.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab> with error: A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

Application Error -- CAP-12

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043c from line 45 of d:\longhorn\com\complus\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.--------------

So what it means and what is to be done.....is left for your expertise to put it in to action....this is as far as I could find/go .....(My guess is these are related to .Net Framework updates not getting installed.)
Your WU team may assist further ..... anytime....

Meanwhile, attempted the solution for Certificate issue as shown in ---

and deleted all contents in ---

After Restart, checked Windows Update to install those 10 .Net Framework Updates .....

Same Error.jpg

------- again the same error!

Further, from the Eventview, the link is used to connect ---- and see if the cab file can be downloaded --- Yes, it got downloaded --authrootstl.cab -- See the file attached. Where to put this file to get things working ? --- is the next question!

This downloaded AuthRootSTL.cab is supposed to be in C:\Windows\System32 folder. Copy-Paste in System32 folder and then tried to install those update by Win Update but again failed -- same error.
Then, there has to be some other way of doing this repair. ... ......

Alright... the downloaded AuthRootSTL.cab was unzipped and root certificate that was in it was right-clicked by mouse and clicked Install. Restart the PC and check Win Updates ... again it picks up the 10 Updates with the same error. So it again strengthens my view that these 10 updates if kept out and if the PC is working just fine then we need not bother. Security, vulnerability, etc is just a scare. Let the 3rd party Anti-virus deal with any such scare..... there was no need for MS or any OS to keep creating patches to cover it.

Security, vulnerability, etc is just a scare. Let the 3rd party Anti-virus deal with any such scare..... there was no need for MS or any OS to keep creating patches to cover it

Really? What makes you come to that conclusion?

I agree..... I am not a computer-pro and my views and conclusions may not be qualified .... but then ....(if we take it positively)... the computer is working fine without those 10 updates.... and from the look of it ... those 10 updates belong to .NET Framework 4.6. And if we cannot install those updates and the computer works just fine then what option are we left with.... obviously, don't install and be happy that computer is working.

And what may sound like an over-statement -- there was no need for MS or any OS to keep creating patches to cover it..... is a fact.... whether one likes it or not. We all know that computers were made porous ---- it had an obvious advantage for hackers. The whole game of security and vulnerability was always tilted towards hackers. If any anti-virus can take care of it ... then that was enough. Now again I do not know how an anti-virus works. I am not a computer pro.

But the fact remains -- My computer is working fine without any issue and without those 10 updates.
This ground reality brings me to the fact, view and a derived conclusion -- further generalized or extrapolated that -- there was no need for MS or any OS to keep creating patches to cover it.

On the corollary, all security, vulnerability, etc were just a scare.

Further, no hacker is anymore interested to waste his time and effort in searching for vulnerabilities ......
Moreover, I am not going to migrate from Vista to Win 7 or Win 10 or Win 12 just because some 10 updates did not get installed.
In my view -- Win Vista still stands strong and mighty!

You may close this thread as Resolved....... if there is nothing further to it. It was a long wait.....Thanks.
