Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion m9426f desktop. I recently had to replace the hard drive and reinstall windows vista 64 bit. Windows update stopped finding updates for me and is only telling me windows could not search for new updates, error code 8024A000, when i clicked on get help, it says "you have lost your connection to the windows help and support website, try to connect again", but never connects. any idea on how I can fix these problems?

also, I have a download for microsoft office 2010 that says "this installation package cannot be installed by the windows installer service. you must install a windows service pack that contains a newer version of the windows installer service.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. I downloaded the screening tool and this is what it said

Also, After I reinstalled vista, I used the windows update for all updates until it stopped working. It never installed the SP1 or SP2. I tried to manually install the service packs after and when I tried to install service pack 1 I received the message " an internal error occurred while installing the service pack. error code 0x8000FFFF

tried the link provided for service pack 2, and it said " you need to install windows service pack 1 before continuing" when I tried to install service pack 1 I received the message " an internal error occurred while installing the service pack. error code 0x8000FFFF

Please do the following. If you are not comfortable doing this please stop immediately and ask for assistance. It's imperative that you do these steps exactly. Thank you.

It would be the first one in your list just named regedit but I'm not sure why it is running from a Windows.old directory? That's usually a directory holding old files after an upgrade.

I did an install after replacing the hard drive twice, the first time i wasn't sure what was wrong with the updates so i reinstalled vista again. will doing the regedit process still be ok if it is doing it from the C:\windows.old file?

after I save the exported components to my desktop, in step 9 where is the details pane found, in the exported components file I just created? none of the values exist there for steps 9-11

Let's do this differently. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

also, I tried to copy the components from system32 config after restarting computer and it still said the file could not copy because it was still in use

can I delete the windows.old file? do I need both on my computer?
Don't delete anything.

Go back to Post#7.
Steps 9, 10 and 11 are actually asking you to look in the details pane of the registry to see if these values exist. Go ahead and follow the instructions. Let me know what you find as well.

Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.
