Windows Updates won't install. I have tried everything!

Hi,

I am at my wits end. I have tried every suggested fix on this page: Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (except for renaming pending b/c there was no pending file found... and I hear it's a bad idea to do that anyway) and I still cannot install the following updates:

KB2992611
KB3003743
KB3011780
KB3008627
KB3013410

I have attached a zipfile of my CheckSUR. It has four "CSI Missing Identity" errors.

The error code on Windows Update today is 80246007 but it has shown other error codes previously. (Sorry, I didn't write those down.)

I am encouraged by how many people you guys have already helped. Hoping I'll be another!

Thanks,
beac

Hello Beac and welcome to Sysnativew forums :)

There are a few missing registry values that SURT has detected:
Code:

(f)	CSI Missing Identity	0x00000000	appid	84fc095d2d5..677cf65b488_31bf3856ad364e35_11.2.9600.16518_add3a274bfe7ced3

Before we start trying to manually repair them lets see if one of our automatic tools can fix this:
Download and Run SFCFix

Please download and run SFCFix from >Here<

It will take about 15 minutes to process. Once the scan has completed a notepad file will launch with the results. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the results and post them back into this thread. Please put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Thank you for the quick reply, Go The Power!

Here's the log:

Unfortunately SFCFix didn't repair the files.

Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products

Navigate to C:\Windows\RegBak\{Date}\ and copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.

Now right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

Then please upload it to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). If you have a Microsoft Account, OneDrive could be a good choice: https://onedrive.live.com/, but any other will do just fine. Make sure to set the file as publicly accessible

Sorry for the delay.

SFCFix script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on the background -> Select New -> Text Document -> Name this file SFCFixScript.txt.
  3. Open up SFCFixScript.txt and copy all of the following text inside the code box below and paste it into SFCFixScript.txt.
    Code:

  4. Click on File -> Save. Close out of SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  6. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  7. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  8. SFCFix will now process the script.
  9. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.

Hello,

Thanks so much. Here are my results:

For all the "reg adds", I got the same error message:

If all are successful, please run SURT again -> once SURT has finished please upload a new log.

Can you try Windows updates again?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was traveling for work.

OK. So I ran Windows Update and it said "3 important updates, 2 selected". I figured I wouldn't mess with that and tried to install the updates it had selected. I got a message that one had failed. (My apologies, I didn't record the error number)

Oddly, when I tried again, it said there were 7 important updates. 1 failed on that run. Error number 8007312.

Ran WU again. 7 updates, 7 selected. I succeeded, 6 failed (Error numbers: 80073721, 8007371B, 8000FFF)

Restarted and ran WU again. 1 important update. 1 failed (Error number: 80073712). When I went to look at the list it showed SIX updates were actually available: Security Updates -KB2992611, KB3003743, KB3011780, and KB302366 (the one that was selected) and Update for Windows - KB3008627, KB3013410)

Shut down and Restarted.

Ran WU. 1 important update (KB3023261). Failed (Error number: 80073712) "Review Important Updates" showed same six as above.

Restarted and it showed "Installing 1(2,3,4,5) of 5 updates" message.

Ran WU again. Same six updates available. Six failed. (Error numbers: 80073712, 8007371B, 8000FFF).

After repairing all those registry fixes lets do a scan with SFC /SCANNOW now.

SFC /SCANNOW

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:
    Code:
    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

SFC /SCANNOW completed successfully but cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt" briefly opens a command window but no cbs.txt file is created (not on the desktop nor anywhere Search could find). Tried several times.

Sorry this is turning out to be such a nightmare.

Have you tried doing a full scan using SuperAntiSpyware or MBAM?
I have found (IMHO) that when updates show up I always download and install the smaller files first then take on the bigger ones last.
Even though you may have to restart it several times this method has worked without any hitches for me.
Dennis

Hi Howling Wolves,

Appreciate the suggestions but, alas, I had tried them both (anti-spyware programs and installing one at a time) before finding this excellent forum. Am beginning to think I need an exorcist.
