Getting error 0x80070005 when trying to install windows updates on Server 2022. I have run sfc and dism and both show no issues or repairs. I have also tried deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, rebooting and still getting the same error. I have enclosed both CBS.zip and ComponentScanner.txt.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. Happy New Year!!!!

Hi @Sonics,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

This is happening with SCCM, Windows Update and the standalone installer. Thanks.

Is this something that is even fixable outside of a full nuke option? This server is running SQL server and I would prefer to not have to rebuild everything. Just looking for some direction? Thanks if you can provide some direction.

Thank you for the response Maxstar. Hope you are well. We are using Defender for Endpoint on our E5 tenant. It is also Azure Arc attached for SQL server monitoring. I have also tried applying updates with different admin accounts. We first noticed this recently and it looks like it started in September of 2024. One strange thing is SCCM initially reported as compliant then we noticed that is really wasn't.

I can supply fresh logs or whatever you need to assist. Thanks for replying and taking the time to try and help. It is appreciated.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hmm, please run ComponentsScanner agaiin.

Download

ComponentsScanner and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click ComponentsScanner.exe and select "Run as administrator", click Yes on the UAC (User Account Control) prompt which appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once complete, a report will be saved to your desktop called ComponentsScanner.txt.
  • Post the logfile ComponentsScanner.txt as attachment into your next reply.

Hmm, please reboot the server and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.
