Hello everyone!
Okay, I am going to describe my problem & all the solutions I have tried so far, before discovering this awesome forum! First, a little bit of background info. . .
My laptop: Lenovo Ideapad 110-15ISK
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.40 GHz
Installed RAM: 12,0 GB (11,9 Usable)
System type: 64 bit OS, x64-based processor
Windows Edition: 10
Version: 1909
OS Build: 18363.1139
I am a photographer & retoucher, so I need my laptop to run smoothly. For that goal, I upgraded the original 4 GB RAM to 12 GB RAM. I also made sure that all my drivers & operating system was kept up to date. I run an Antivirus/Security program prescribed by my bank - it's called Trend Micro, and for the last 5 years of using it (on an older pc before this one, and the last 2 years on this one), I have never had one problem. . .till I went and downloaded some "free" software (plugin for Photoshop) I shouldn't have (from a site I cannot remember), and I have been having problems ever since.
Steps I then took:
*I used a program that got rid of a virus that seemed to do things like hack my browser (constantly opening new pages).
*I cleared my cookies & site data, download history, browsing history, cached images & files.
*I made space on my laptop by deleting unnecessary files & empty folders - I think I might have deleted something there that I should not have, by accident, that is necessary for the running of the computer).
*I used Malwarebytes ADW Cleaner to look for any corrupted files & fragments. It found PUP files & bloatware, which it told me to quarantine. I did, and found no problem in running my pc, so I went ahead and permanently deleted them. It was then that I discovered problems like my Windows Update Service has stopped working. I used the system restore tool to go back to before I used the ADW Cleaner, but the same problems was still there.
I discovered I cannot even go into the "Windows Update" section of my settings - it just has a spinning blue circle (line) and a blank black screen. Neither can I get into subdirectories like Update History. I also cannot update any Microsoft Store aps (shows no updates available), even though I know for a fact of at least 2 updates available. I discovered my Windows Update Service has stopped, and tried several things without success to get it started again:
*services.msc (I switch it on, but it switches back off a few seconds later. I would try to log on using "this account" (see screenshot 01), but I have no idea what to fill in there, or what password they are looking for.
*Ran Command Prompt as an administrator, using the term "net start wuauserv" (It said: "System Error 1058 has ocurred. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it").
*Ran PowerShell as an administrator using the term "start-service wuauserv" (It gave me a long explanation why it couldn't - see screenshot 02).
*Ran RegEdit by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv (Tried to change it there, but it didn't work either).
I was just about to give up, when I found this awesome forum. I proceeded to register, and followed the Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions:
*Step #1 - I registered
*Step#2 - Ran SFC Scan and found no problems (see attachment labled Step 2_SFC Scan)
*Step#3 Ran SURT/DISM Scan. The instructed term "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth" told me it does not recognise the command (see attachment labled Step 3a_SURT_DISM Scan). I then ran a term I came across before for the same scan "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth" (see attachment labled 3b_SURT_DISM Scan. It also gave me a log file - see attachment dism.log.zip).
*Step#4 - Ran SFCFix - I downloaded the free tool and found no problems (see attachment labled Step 4_SFCFix.txt)
*Step#5 - I got asked to upload a zipped version of my CBS folder (see attachment labled CBS.zip)
*Step #6 was to start this thread as a new topic/thread.
I have described & attached everything I can think of. Please don't hesitate to ask for any more information. I am desperately trying to fix this, so I can get my Windows Update Service working again, so I can update to the new Windows (October 2020, which should set right any other issues), and so I can update some Microsoft Store apps which I badly need! PLEASE HELP ME!
Thanks in advance!
