[SOLVED] Windows Update repeatedly fails on 2021-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4598242)

My laptop is repeatedly stuck on this update and cannot get past it with windows update reporting:

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800f0905)"

Tried skipping past this update by trying the "Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2" but this fails also with a different hex code (sorry don't have a note of that).

Tried a Reset Windows Update Tool after going through the troubleshooter for windows update and it's suggested links but not resolved.

Have now gone through the suggested steps on this forum and nothing detected, (see SFCFix text below) I will attach screen shots of the process so far.

Any help greatly appreciated, thank you!

Not had any responses yet but still getting the same problem on automatic updates or on manual updates...

All, I have solved my issue by performing an in place upgrade using the media creation tool.

Unlike reinstallation, this process will keep all your files and installed applications, so you can continue where you left off. To perform an in-place upgrade, do the following:

  1. Download and run Media Creation Tool.
  2. Now select Upgrade this PC now option.
  3. The setup will prepare the necessary files, so you’ll need to wait.
  4. Select Download and install updates (recommended) and click Next.
  5. Wait while the updates are downloaded.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen. On Ready to install screen click Change what to keep option.
  7. Select Keep personal files and apps and click Next.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the in-place upgrade process.

Once the upgrade process is finished, you’ll have a fresh installation of Windows 10 and your problems should be resolved.
