Windows Update problems: "Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later."

Hello all,

I've had my share of issues with Windows Update in the past but recently I encountered one new to me although I subsequently learned it isn't uncommon.

From the main Settings screen, when I click Windows Update, after about a minute of searching, it throws the vague error message: "Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later." It provided no error codes.

Please find enclosed my latest SFC and DISM logs as well as my ComponentsScanner log. Although it reports "no possible repairs," as the tool ran, it threw the following on the command prompt: "Sequence numbers do not match! Hive is Dirty and the transaction logs should be reviewed for relevant data!" and "Sequence mismatch! Primary=32989. Secondary=32988"

What I have tried without success:

SFC/ scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Windows Update Troubleshooter
Reset Windows Update dot bat (MajorGeeks)
Reset Windows Update Tool (Manuel Gil). It gives 15 repair options to choose from. I chose most of them and received no errors except for when I ran the option "delete any incorrect registry errors." There it threw something along the lines of "unexpected error has occurred."
FixWU (The Windows Club; reregisters dlls)
Reset Settings app

The last DISM I ran gave me: 1. Check Health = repairable 2. Scan Health = no store corruption. The operation completed successfully.

I tried installing KB5031356 manually but it failed.

This may be totally irrelevant but upon running the Start Menu Troubleshooter, the report said Shell Experience Host and Cortana apps are not installed correctly.

My specs: Windows 10 Pro, 22H2, build 19045.3448, Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19044.1000.0.

Thank you so much for your assistance and I look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Update/gentle bump.

Since I last wrote I've attempted additional troubleshooting.

StopUpdates10 failed. Reset_reregister_windows_update_components.bat failed. Tried resetting components manually; seemed like half of the files succeeded and half failed so as a whole that attempt failed. I forgot to mention prior to the sfc I ran a chkdsk /f which didn't help. Tried Update Fixer, a tool from the person who created jv16PowerTools, which also failed.

On what may be a related note, I'm now unable to run bat files. "Choose default apps by file type" gives me "there is no installed app for this type of file or protocol" and prompts me to look for an app in the Store rather than offer a drop-down list of existing apps.

So I remain stuck with "Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later." I guess ultimately I'm hoping for a customized FRST or SFCFix rather than a reset or clean reinstall.

Thanks again for all you're doing and I hope to hear from someone soon.
