[SOLVED] Windows Update Not Working

Hi, I went to upgrade my mother-in-law/s laptop to Windows 10 but have found that Windows Update isn't working so I could not carry out the upgrade. The update history shows a large bunch of updates was installed on 28/05/15 together with a Hotfix, since then nothing.
I can remember than the machine was affected by some malware at the time which I believe I cleaned from the machine. Sorry I uninstalled the hotfix just now without checking the number....... Have run a number of Microsoft Fixits today but nothing has worked. The Surt tool shows the machine is clean of defects as does the SFC Scannow
I would be very grateful for your help. The machine is running Win 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 32bit

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Did you try to upgrade to Windows 10 via the Media Creation Tool? It's way easier that way.

Thanks for your response. No I haven't done that.

As part of the upgrade process the machine automatically checks for update. The scrolling progress bar comes up but it never stops scrolling and it never ends the search. I think that was after it loaded win 10 which took ages.
If I download the iso will it avoid this step?
Also I was concerned that I might need the latest updates on Win 7 to ease the transition to Win 10. Is this a false assumption?

The easiest way to upgrade if you ask me is to download the Windows 10 .iso using the Media Creation Tool, mount it, and launch the setup.exe inside it.

And you don't need any updates on Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 10.
