Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them.

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file

Thanks.

Could take me quite a while to go through your logs and Components file, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download SFCFix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and also save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Thank you, Gary, for the support. We're treading into territory i'm starting to feel uncomfortable with. I'm running mysterious executables and sharing too much information that i dont undertstand. I'm going to tap out and thank you for your support up to this point. Instead i'm going to cut my losses with my OS and do a format / reinstall.

Thanks again.

Please close the case.

No problem. Thanks for letting me know.

SFCFix is used solely to replace missing or corrupt component, manifest, or package files used by Windows to update, we use it to simplify dealing safely with the permissions required to replace such files. Dealing with those permissions manually would just extend the time needed on what is already a fairly time consuming process.

No personally identifiable information will be exposed during any of the fixes we propose here.

However, I appreciate your concerns, and that you feel more comfortable reinstalling your OS, so I'll mark this topic as solved and close it.
