Windows update I get the error code 80073712 I don't know what else to try

When I try to do a windows update I get the error code 80073712.

I ran a few times ChkDsk /r /f with no problems showing. No bad sectors.

I have installed:
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems KB947821-v34

I have rebooted and tried Windows Update after each procedure I tried.

I ran:
SFC /scannow
It's running clean from a bootable DVD with Win7

I have uploaded the Components file to:

I have uploaded the CBS.log to:

I have uploaded the CheckSUR.persist.log to:
http://theoffice.la/m/CheckSUR.persist.zip

I ran this:
open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands
REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG ADD HKLM\COMPONENTS /t REG_BINARY /v StoreFormatVersion /d 30002e0030002e0030002e003600

This is what I got:
C:\Windows\system32>REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
The operation completed successfully.

I ran this:
open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands
reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS %windir%\System32\config\COMPONENTS

Windows Repair (All in One) v2.11.1.exe

I have done a Repair Install according to these instructions:

I have run AutoPatcher - Updating all Windows fixes.

I have run Malwarebytes - Updated
I have run SuperAntiSpyware - Updated
I have run CCleaner - Updated
I have restored an old registry backup

Hello and welcome to the forum

Some of the fixes you ran are specialized to users that are having a specific corruption, this can often cause more issues. In your case the COMPONENTS hive is completely missing, this is not a good sign at all.

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

Click on the

button. Inside the search box type in CMD
Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

Do you have any recent System Restore points? If yes, we might be able to extract the COMPONENTS hive from one of these.

I don't have any System Restore points. I do have a backup from 2014 if it's ok to use that.

1. Would it be ok to use these Components files with the current state of the OS?
2. Are these Components files ok if I would restore the entire backup?

I also have more recent backups up the registry but I don't think the Components hive is in the registry normally.

when you make the backups of the registry is it of the folder C:\windows\System32\Config? if yes you might have the COMPONENTS hive in there.

That hive you provided is good, it still loads.

To be honest with you here, when the COMPONENTS hive is missing I always recommend a fresh install of Windows or at the bare minimum a repair install of windows. We can try and use this COMPONENT file from the 5/11/2014, but this will only work if no other updates have been done in this time, there is all also no 100% guarantee that this will resolve the issue. its up to you if you want to try it or not.

Thank you for the information.

I have replace the components file with the one I provided you. This file did originally come from this PC. I have done a repair install of windows. I have applied all MS updates with no problems. The OS seems to be working properly.

Is there some test I should perform to make sure everything is good?
