Windows Update Freezes - Stuck At Stopping in services.msc

I have been hitting my head against the wall trying to update my version of 8.1 64bit version. Everytime I try to update the update window becomes unresponsive. If I check out services.msc it seems stuck at 'Stopping'. Have tried the windows update troubleshooter with no success.

Went through the process to see if I can get some help here. Here are the results:

Tried another restart and still same issues. Windows Update seems to get stuck. Also ran a malware review and nothing there.

Let's see if DISM will repair any of the files automatically.

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Very good.

Let's reset the Windows Update Components and try checking for updates.

Run Windows Repairs

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

10 - Remove Policies Set By Infection
14 - Remove Temp Files
17 - Repair Windows Updates
Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Once your computer is at the Desktop, start Windows Update and check for updates. This will take much longer than usual.
When the check for updates is complete, try installing one (if any are offered) and let me know the results.

This is awesome - went through the process and just successfully installed a Microsoft Silverlight update. I have 44 more to go - should I do them all at once or do you recommend doing one at a time?

That said, so far so good so I am going to try to continue to install the updates.

The optional updates are generally a good idea to install, excluding things like Skype.
Don't install driver updates in the optional section, they can be problematic.
