Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64
===================================================
Long history of specific Windows update failed repeatedly.
I confess that I went through several steps based on this thread because all the symptons lined up: [Win7SP1 x64]Manifest problem? [SOLVED] - [Win7SP1 x64]Manifest problem?

Many of my problems were fixed! No more errors with SFC /scannow. I get the following "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
===================================================
When I run DSIM I get:

C:\Users\test>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Image Version: 6.1.7601.18489

Error: 87

The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context.
For more information, refer to the help.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.

Peter,
please pardon my ignorance, but I'm not sure which tool or how to run on Windows 7...

Thanks,
Michael

No problem.
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.
  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log in your next reply.
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.
System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Peter,
Since no errors in CheckSUR.log, I tried Windows Update. It failed with 3 updates.
Is there something else I need to do?

Sorry if I jumped ahead of the plan...
Michael

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.

Code:
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the download link.

Sorry, lost track of this thread. Do you still need help ?

The PC is working OK. It's a remote PC.
Previously (before your help) I could not even log in with TightVNC and needed to have someone on-site reboot it every day or so.

BUT, I still have Windows update errors and doubt that I can upgrade to Windows 10 (which is my goal)

Thanks for checking!

Restart the computer.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

I restarted the PC, and tried windows update again.
There were 3 mandatory updates, all failed.
I've zipped and copied the file to my google drive: CBS.zip

Thank you!
