Windows Update fails

Windows updates aren't installing and now my Printer says "Driver unavailable".

I'm having the same Windows Updates error 0x800703f1 that a lot of other folks have. I've scoured the internet and it seems like people get results here. I sure hope someone can help me out.

The result from SFC shows this error

Upload the SCHEMA.DAT file

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine and copy the SCHEMA.DAT file to your desktop.
Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named SCHEMA.ZIP on your desktop.
Attach this ZIP-file to your next reply.

Hi,

Replace the SCHEMA.DAT file

Download Schema.zip and save to your desktop, right-click on it and select Extract all.
Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine and rename the SCHEMA.DAT file to SCHEMA.old
Copy the SCHEMA.DAT on your deskop into the above directory.

Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

I replaced the SCHEMA.dat file then rebooted.

I clicked on install for "2023-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5030211)" and it got to Installing 90% and said restart required. I restarted and when Windows started coming back up it said "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes."

Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.

Hi,

Replace Drivers Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

I applied the drivers file, rebooted, and then installed the windows update, which asked for another restart. It's been sitting on "restarting.." with the spinning circle for about 40 minutes. Do you have any suggestions? Should I just continue to wait?

Yes, please wait, especially if there is still HDD activity! A forced reboot may cause other issues.

Six hours and it's still running. Though the screen is black now and I just have a cursor. I haven't watched it the whole time, but I don't see any HDD light blinking anymore.

I hard reset the PC after 8 hours, then it wouldn't boot up again. (kept saying "updates 0% please wait" after I turned it back on). Eventually I got into safe mode and did the startup repair to get back into Windows. Here's my current CBS logs.

Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.

Wait for this to complete.

Download

ListChkdskResult.exe and save it on your desktop.

Rightclick ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator.
Notepad will open the file ListChkdskResult.txt on completion. (This logfile ListChkdskResult.txt is also saved on your desktop.)
Post the logfile ListChkdskResult.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi,

This looks good to me, and the latest CBS log does not reveal any useful information. So I would suggest to update again and post the result.
