[SOLVED] Windows update fails to install monthly security patches with error 80073701

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.

Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
Press the Fix button.
The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.

Please see the log files for the two fixlist files (aptly named Fixlog1 and Fixlog2).
I attached the checksur.log but it looks to be empty.

Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, run sfc /scannow again and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

SUCCESS!
I just installed the latest windows security update and it went smoothly.

This was quite the journey

I just installed the latest windows security update and it went smoothly.

That is good news.

Your machine had some registry corruptions which we fixed.
The final problem was an incomplete Windows Update, probably due to the registry corruptions, which is fixed also.

I see. A little bit annoying though, as I would expect Microsoft to have a solution for that.
In any case, thanks a lot. again!
I feel much better now that I can install those security updates.
