I just ran into error code 0x80073712 when I tried to install KB2871997 from Windows Update on my Windows 7 SP1 64bit notebook. I followed the steps from MS support Error Code 0x80073712 occurs in Windows Update or Microsoft Update for Windows 7 except for no. 3 (already had ServicePack 1 pre-installed) and no. 5 (in-place upgrade - a little bit to drastic for my taste in order to just install one simple fix). I also downloaded KB2871997 manually from Microsoft Security Advisory: Update to improve credentials protection and management: May 13, 2014 but it still would not install.
