Windows update error 0x80073712

Hi,

I'm having trouble with a Server 2012 R2 installation where WU fails with error 0x80073712. I have ran the usual

SFC /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (+ /source: from mounted 2012 R2 ISO)

Please Help:

Additional Info:
I will be uploading the CBS log file and the ComponentsScanner.txt I just wanted to get this thread going in case I need to do something else as well.

Here are the requested folder & file(s) please let me know if anything else is needed form my end. I was not sure which component scanner version to run so I ran both.

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

Download

SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Step 2:
Restart the computer.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

It failed again. SFCFix says it fixed something, but it didn't help my issue. I attached a screenshot of the error I got after rebooting and trying to install the update.

The error has changed so we did make progress.

Export registry as hive

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
Once selected, click File > Export....
Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
If the file is too large to upload here, please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the downloadlink here.

So a little bad news. No matter what I did I was unable to export the Component Based Servicing reg file as a hive no matter where I tried to export it. I kept getting the error message shown in Capture 3.
I read online that I needed SSU (KB5018922) so I installed that and then tried to install KB5022352 (The one that keeps failing, and the reason I opened this thread) but that failed and that is shown in capture 2.
I was however able to export the ComponentBasedServicing as a reg file and have attached that along with the latest cbs file.

The registry export file is incomplete, probably due to the corruption.

Retrieve Software Hive

So, this time something different happened. Different updates appeared and installed successfully 5 of them. But KB5022352 still failed to install. After rebooting, I checked for updates and got a different one KB5025285 which did not install. I also see KB4505219 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1 but it does not install either. Sorry if it was not made clear before but I am wanting to install KB5022352 as it is a security patch for windows server 2012 R2 and continually failing on my system over and over. I have attached both the cbs.log file and the SFCfix.txt file in the zip folder.

strike my last reply. I am checking on something. I Will reply with latest update. It appears the same issue is occurring but just for these two patches. Give me a few and I will reply with my updated request.

So after review, I now have two patches that are failing install. They are the patches stated in the last email. The cbs.log and the SFCfix.txt are both up to date with the latest failures after trying to install those patches. Essentially the error message is the same but the patches have now changed to more recent patches so it looks like progress is being made.

Remove Update Manually

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
wusa /uninstall /KB:4598275
Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

FRST Registry Search

Click the Start button and in the search box, type CMD
When you see cmd.exe on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.
Code:

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
```
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep the command prompt windows open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
Copy and paste KB4598275 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
You may close any remaining open windows now.

Provide a screenshot of the window that appaers.

Step 2:
Remove Update Manually

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
wusa /uninstall /KB:5004298
Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
