Ran SFC /SCANNOW It took more than 20x to get to 100%. Then ran Checksur. Got 6 errors. Read Niermiro's comment. DL'd her SFCfix.exe file. One error got fixed. Still had others. Basically found the same issue over on sfc unable to fix corrupt files and Corrine responded that the person's problem was resolved. sfc /scannow cannot repair corrupted files.

Hi USMCvet :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Follow the instructions below please.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;
  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is:
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

If you go in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS, do you have a file called CheckSUR.log?

Alright, how does it crashes exactly? Does it throws you an error message or just say in the header that the program isn't responding?

Really? Alright, follow the instructions below please.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select

    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

I need you to post the download URL for it. Go on Dropbox.com, right-click on your file and select Share. From there, copy/paste here the URL that is given to you.

Your CBS.log is clean, can you try to run SURT again?

I should've mentioned that the PC crashes even when I am not downloading or installing the SURT. Will run and let you know results.

Once again, yes that's right.

Still not able to install KB947821. Found old attempts from Sept. 2014 where I tried and it failed. Cleaned all of those up. Also, ran chkdsk /r to clean/repair the h/d. That took 12 hours, yesterday. Cleaned out Windows/SoftwareDistribution/DataStore folder. Now I can't run windows update without Windows Explorer crashing.

When I boot, it stops on amdkmpfd.sys file.

Also, I noticed that IE 11 is not showing up as being installed anywhere in my updates, but I'm running it. (?) Not sure how that is possible.

Trying to do a system restore now....

Let's just make sure that your hard drive isn't failing before moving on.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

I managed to get all of my Windows updates installed after the System Restore. I am still crashing. I also need to figure out why IE 11 isn't showing up as being installed in my updates....

Downloading GSmartControl s/w now....

Also, something weird: My system is showing a floppy disk drive and NO DVD in System Controls. I do not have an A: drive. I have tried repeatedly to disable and uninstall it but upon bootup, it keeps installing new devices. Also, I posted a help message out on microsoft's website for the driver for this DVD drive and no one can help me with it. ATAPI DVD A LH-1H18A ATA Device

What keeps on crashing, Windows?
