Hello,

this is the first time I'm posting here. I need help. I've been trying to install a Windows update with no success (Cumulative Update KB5013942) for a couple of days now. It downloaded and installed normally, then when it was time to restart, after 98% complete, the screen showed the message "We couldn't install the updates. Undoing changes." I've tried to repeat it several times and still the same problem until today. What might be causing this?
CBS is shared via Google Drive because it's greater than 7MB

Thank you for your help.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the command SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt and report the result.
  • If it fails, attach a zipped C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your next reply.

Restarting the computer. I'll return shortly.

Edit: I should note that yesterday I put Windows Update on pause because if I didn't it would just repeat the same "couldn't complete update, undoing changes" loop

I ran SFC again

Where do i go from here? And do you still need the new CBS log?

See if you can update successfully now.

If you can please let me know.

If you can't, please post your .... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Hello, Gary

Still unable to update. Here's the new CBS log

What do you think might be causing this? Something like missing/corrupted component/registry? Malware-related?

CBS.zip

Looking over your log now, back ASAP.

Sorry to be so late getting back to you, something turned up last night that I had to deal with.

First ...

Question ...
do you use Bitlocker encryption ?

Next ....

  • Download Process Monitor to your Desktop.
  • Launch the program.
  • Click on Options and then select Enable Boot Logging
    • When prompted, do not check Generate thread profiling events, just click OK
  • Close Process Monitor

Next ...

  • Reboot your computer, and when fully booted ... launch Process Monitor
  • You will be prompted with "A log of boot-time activity was created by a previous instance of Process Monitor" and asked if you want to save the collected data now. Click Yes
  • Save the log created ... Bootlog.pml ... to your Desktop.
  • Close Process Monitor

Next ...

In your next reply, please attach your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Next ...

Upload the Bootlog to a file sharing service (it will be too large to attach) ...

Sorry, I am unable to download your Bootlog.pml file from the server you used, can you please try again using a different service.

So far I've tried half a dozen times, and the furthest I've got is about 700M out of a 2.2G download.

Hello, Gary

WeTransfer and SendFileOnline has file size limits and my PML exceeds both. Do you have any other suggestion?

Not off hand, I'll have a look around and see what I can find.

Just tried again, and got to 300M before it failed this time.

I'll post back if/when I find an alternative.

Yes, got it now. (y)

Could take me a while to go through it, I'll get back to you once I've finished.

Took a little longer than expected, sorry for the delay.

  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop
    • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST
  • Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator
  • Copy and paste KB5013942 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.

Gary, just a little update of the current situation of the pc.

Now Windows Security won't start. This it what it shows. Is this still related to the update problem?

Nothing we've done so far should have caused the problem with Windows Security. I'll have to have a think about that.

In the meantime please do the following ...

  • Download the file Fixlist.txt attached to this post to your Desktop. (must be in this location)
  • Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
