Hello everyone,

The task view of Windows 10 (All the nice tiles) on both mine and my wife's PC have suddenly disappeared.
I think that this has happened after one of the many Windows updates that we seem to be getting.

Is there an easy to restore this view,

Thanks

Jim

Hi JamesAB

Try this:
1) Right-click a blank area on your Windows 10 Taskbar along the bottom of the screen
2) A pop-up menu should appear, look for an item "Show Task View button" and select it.

I'll guess that an update likely changed the setting, as you suspect. Some of the "roll-up" or "cumulative" updates have had this bad habit recently.

Thank you for your reply,

I can see the Task View button on the task bar, but when I click on it, I just get the desktop back ground with no program icons or, if I am running programs they appear in windows on the screen. In addition when I click on the "Start" icon (the window panes in the l.h. bottom corner, nothing happens. I should get the "app" tiles, but I don't :-)

Sounds like, for the most part, Task View is doing its part (showing small examples of your open programs), but your Windows 10 Start Menu is not working correctly...

Or ... Is it that by "task view" with all the icons = are you referring to the Windows 8 style "Start Screen" (that has nice large icons, and takes up your whole screen - plus also (usually) having more icons when scrolling to the side or up and down? If yes - try: right-click the Windows icon, select Search, type in Personalization, select Personalization, select Start, and select "Use Start full screen" -- this should cause Windows 10 to display the Windows 8 style Start Screen with the large icons.

If the Windows 8 style Start Screen is not what you're looking for, but the new Windows 10 Start Menu that includes tiles off to the right-hand side, your quickest fix for that might be to try a System Restore to a point just before the Start Menu stopped working. Try right-clicking the Windows icon, select System, select System Protection, and select System Restore. If an update caused a problem, this should fix things. And Microsoft often updates problematic updates ... so that if they download and install later on: they won't work mischief on your system next time around...

Let us know if you have questions

Thanks again for your reply, OGG, :-) First of all I was mistaken - my wife's PC is OK.
It is the new windows 10 start menu with the tiles off to the rhs that I would like to restore. I have looked at system restore and I did try the most recent point, without effect. I am reluctant to go further back because I see I will uninstall a recent "Steam" game and, since I am well into it, I don't want to take chances that I might loose it . With regard to using the Search function and personalisation although I can bring up the menu with search on it, clicking on search does nothing. Also, although Cortana's search box is visible and the little microphone icon, I cannot type into the box and when I try to speak to Cortana, she ignores me. Is this any help in diagnosing the problem?

Thanks & Regards, Jim

Hi again

Thanks for letting us know the extra details: very helpful.

The trouble with the Windows 10 Start Menu and Cortana going haywire has cropped up a few times in the early months of this six months of Windows 10. There are several ways to try to fix it - we've already tried System Restore. Some of the other fixes are: 1) creating a new user profile (temporarily, and hoping for an eventual patch from Microsoft to fix things - so you can return to the original user profile), 2) A method that checks for system file corruptions & attempts to repair them, using tools briefly called SFC and DISM, 3) a method that re-installs all the Windows apps (the "built-in" apps... which include the Start Menu and Cortana) this involves running a command in PowerShell ... and lastly, 4) performing a System Reset saving personal files (which is basically a re-install of Windows 10 that saves your docs, pics, music, etc.... but doesn't save your programs (they have to be reinstalled).

The quickest try would be #3 ... it's a little messy looking (truthfully, the Windows built-in apps are my least favorite aspect of Windows 10 .. they need to improve) ... and it produces scary looking error messages while it's completing its job ... but it has worked (and worked quickly) for many users. If you'd like to try that method, the good part about it is that it should affect Steam or your current gameplay.

Here's how: Since your Start Menu isn't working, we'll navigate to PowerShell "the long way"
1) Right-click your Taskbar, and select Task Manager.
2) From the File drop-down menu, select Run New Task.
3) In the Create New Task window that opens, type powershell and place a checkmark in the box Create this task with administrative privileges.
4) And select OK.
5) At the prompt PS C:\Windows\System32> copy and paste in the following command
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

The apps will download and install within a few minutes ... you'll see the messy red errors (usually a non-issue) - you can ignore these .... once the process has completed, restart Windows ..
... and (hopefully) enjoy your working Start Menu and Cortana again.

.... Good luck!

[P.S. ... If this method doesn't work, you can try the more thorough SFC and DISM method next. I can give the step by step instructions for that, or you can follow the steps (with screenshots) from a handy online article Has your Windows 10 Start menu stopped working? Here are four ways to fix it - B
By the way, screenshots of the PowerShell commands are also in that article.]

Errmmm, I might have been a bit precipitous..... although I have the W10 tiles back and most work,There are one or two that don't. In particular the Store app and the Windows photo app. In the latter case the tile is giving a slide-show of my photos but when I click on it all that is very briefly displayed is what looks like the folder structure leading to the app. The same sort of thing happens when I click on the store app. I have tried the Windows app trouble shooter but this doesn't work.

I would be grateful for any ideas to fix this.

Thanks,

Jim

Tell you what, for our next try, let's make sure the system files are OK. This method can take a bit of time. The acronym for it is "DISM" (Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management Tool) ....

Running DISM online

It's best to have a good and fast Internet connection for this method, and to make sure there is no malware presence on the computer beforehand.

1) Right-click the Windows Start Menu icon
2) From the menu, select Command Prompt (Admin)
3) To the question "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your computer?", select Yes
7) Type in the following command: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Try to be patient with it: the time it takes varies a lot from machine to machine, and the speed of the Internet connection can add extra time when slow. Even if the "Percentage Complete" stops for a long time at a certian percentage, wait it out: it's fairly normal for the percentage displayed to not get refreshed for quite a long time.

Let's see if it helps.

Hi Gary, Tried running DISM command but it failed. For some reason I can't attach screen shot of error message so I have written it out:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism/Online/Clean-upImage/RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.10586.0

Error 87

The online/clean-upimage/restorehealth option is unknown.
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

C:\WINDOWSasystem32>

I ran DISM.exe and there is no Cleanup-Image or RestoreHealth options in the list of commands.

Regards

Jim

Further to the above, there has to be a space between each part of the command when I copied and pasted from your message I must have included a space either before or after because windows didn't like it and said " " was an unknown command. So I made sure there were no spaces and then I got the error message I have just posted.

I have now tried again and have successfully run the command. As probably expected the problem with the inactive tiles still persists. Trying to open a picture from outside the tile view I get "The remote procedure call failed" indicating the missing app.

Jim

I have run the /scannow command and no problems were reported. So I again ran the "get app package procedure" that you asked me to do previously and which restored some of the tiles. I'm not sure what improvement, if any has occurred as yet. I coppied all the red error messages when running the procedure and, if of any use, can be found at:

Dropbox - Windows PowerShell-App deployment errors.do

Thanks for your kind help,

Jim

Hi again - sorry for the delay...

Just to make sure that I'm following all your steps so far:
The good part:
You had no errors running SFC /scannow - good! You were able to successfully run the DISM command (after fixing the typo problem) - good! The Start menu and Cortana work now - good!
The not-so-good: the Windows Store icon and the Photos app do not start properly when selected from the right-hand icon section of the Start Menu. No error message appears, the apps fail to open. When a picture is double-clicked, the remote procedure call failed error occurs.

Since you've just run the app that refreshes all the Windows Apps, and most of them are working now, with the exception of the Store and Photos - let's see if we can get them working without too much drama.

For the Store, try the automated FixIt from Microsoft that checks on Store Registry entries, resets the Store, and clears the cache:
Solution Detail

And for Photos, check that some dependencies are set OK: Windows Start Menu > All apps > Windows Administrative Tools > Services. Make sure that DCOM Process Launcher, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), and RPC Endpoint Mapper are set to AUTOMATIC, and that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator is set to MANUAL. The three set to automatic should also display as "RUNNING".

If Store and Photos work after that, we've been lucky. Let me know how it goes.

[P.S. we haven't removed the Store, so the Store reinstall procedure (that you pasted a link to) might be a bit unpredictable]

A little extra note:
Looking around, it seems that quite a few users are experiencing trouble with some of the Windows Apps due to some inadvertent file deletion performed by Registry-cleaning programs. If you happen to use any (or have "tune-up" programs that might have such functions) - try turning such programs off for a while. CCleaner has been mentioned as a problem for some - especially in regard to the Photos app. I happen to use CCleaner all the time (though I don't allow it to "monitor" my system, nor run automatically). If you do use CCleaner, turn its monitoring function off, and look into it's advanced settings for anything that might be disruptive to the Photos app -- it might be clearing a Temp file or folder that Photos relies on. CCleaner is highly flexible: it's likely you can simply make CCleaner leave the Photos app's files & folders alone.

* by the way, "DCOM Process Launcher" in my post before this should read "DCOM Server Process Launcher" (typo!)

Hi Gary, Thank you for your reply. No need to apologise for any delay in replying, I am very grateful that you are taking the trouble to help me!

You are correct in your assessment of the current situation. I have now run the MS tool that you linked and it reports:

"You'll need a new app to open this
MS-Windows Store"

I have checked the dependencies and they are ok. The photos are no problem as I can open then with photo gallery but I hate things not working in the way that they should! There were a couple of other apps, MS Zone video and photos, I think, which were not working but i didn't use them and have unpinned them from start menu.

I use Iobit Advanced System Care Pro to maintain my system, which seems to be pretty good but, of course, I have no idea if it has done something it should not have. Suffice to say I have been using it for quite a while when Windows Store etc. were working fine.

With regard to the link I posted that reinstalled the Store, there was reference to a link that removed the Store first, so I would have done so.

Thanks again,

Jim

I have just noticed something else: The windows calculator icon has gone missing from my task bar. if I search for it in the search pane, It reveals:

@
{Microsoft.WindowsCalculator_10.1601.49............

Looking at "All Apps" under "OTHER" (at the bottom of the list) I see there are 15 apps which are referenced as above.

Interesting :-)

Hmm ... I remember when Iobit was just starting out ... if they are continuing in the same mode that they began in, they do indeed feature several "cleanup" functions that possibly might be configurable. It's worth exploring. Several discussions by users having similar troubles have pointed to the fact that the apps can't find files they are looking for. Just out of curiosity - see what happens if you disable temp file cleaning functions by Iobit, and then try the reinstall-all-windows-10-apps method from earlier.

I see that many users are having these issues --- I haven't been able to re-create the errors on my Windows 10 testers here (I only have two machines still testing). I don't have a "System Tuneup" type of software installed (I prefer to do anything like this myself) ... but I do use Avast free antivirus (I actually like the free version better than the pro version, and I recommend not using their Remote Assistance, password, or cleanup functions that are optional if you choose "optional" during the installation ... I also recommend setting the Sensitivity of each "shield" to "High" in Settings ... and also to enable the setting to scan for "PUPS'). I can't remember how many years I've used Avast, but I believe Windows 2000/XP were the Windows versions when I first tried their program.

Let's hope it's something as simple as this!

[P.S. late edit ... also, if you can, have Iobit NOT clean the Registry AT ALL ...

.... and, if you want to try something new, and you can reinstall Iobit later on without much bother & at no extra cost -- I'd be interested in what happens if you uninstall Iobit completely ... (since it has antivirus/antimalware functions, I'm assuming that you don't have any other "realtime- always-on" antivirus programs installed ... if you do, you need to choose just one) ... and try things with Avast as your sole antivirus... the free version stays free - only needs to be re-registered once a year with a legit email address ... but you have to be careful to decline the offers to install the "free trial" of their full "Internet Security" ... sometimes you have to decline the offer at least twice to get only the free version installed]
