Windows Server Standard 2022 Version 21H2 (OS Build 20348.1906)

New-ish server build (VM) built around July or August 2023. Windows CUs will not install, this happened in September so I tried a few things, nothing worked so I decided to wait until October's CU came out and try again. So KB5031364 fails with error 80073701

I've tried all the standard stuff, delete Software Distribution folder, Windows Troubleshooter, SFC, DISM and nothing helps. I've tried installing from Windows Update as well as downloading the MSU package from the MS Download center. It's always the same error code.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi, Thanks for that. I ran the fix and the update still failed.

When I ran SCFIX phase 1 of 6 said it failed on server but stages 2 through 6 seemed to run ok. Attached is the new CBS logs and the SCFIX log.

Thank you.

Thank you very much. it looks like that second one did the trick. The update was successfully installed and Windows update show no more updates available!

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear the updates installed successfully after the last fix...(y)
I will mark this thread as solved then.
