We have been experiencing this issue with the previous cumulative update (KB5036909) and we were hoping it would resolve itself with KB5037782 with no such luck.

It stalls around 20% and then fails with the error code 0x800f081f.

The following steps have been tried:

  • Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB5037782)" could not be installed because of error 2149851149
  • Started BITS service manually
  • Ran scf /scannow - no issues found
  • Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth - no issues found
  • Still stuck at 0% downloading
The following instructions don't allow us to rename catroot2, locked by "network service".

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv

Hopefully that's everything covered, attached are the necessary files.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi Maxstar,

It progressed quicker past the 20% sticking point to 100% but failed again with error 0x800f081f again.

See the attached files as requested, thanks for your help!

Hi Maxstar,

You legend, that last one has done the trick, it's installed and prompting to restart. I shall schedule that for this evening out of hours but I am confident this has resolved the issue.

I shall follow up if not and have attached the SFCFix.txt file in the event it's needed for record or improvments.

Hi,

I believe the server is trying to install an old update, the following shows in the history:

2024-01 Security Update for Microsoft server operating system version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034439) (2)
Failed to install on 13/06/2024 - 0x80070643

However the entry prior to that is as follows, so newer:

2024-06 Cumulative Update for Microsoft server operating system version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5039227)
Successfully installed on 13/06/2024

Let me know what information you need to me to extract etc.

Hi Maxstar, Thanks for the information, that had come up on occasions during our investigations but think it disappeared once superseded.

Also wasn't expecting the expansion to be that simple so processed an increase on the recovery partition and the update has gone through!

Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated, will be returning to this forum in the future when we experience update issues.
