Good afternoon
I have some servers that from cycle to cycle have been failing updates with this error ( Windows update could not be installed because of error 2149842967 ).
Can someone help me?

Hi @RMCR,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

Hello and welcome,

Export registry as hive
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the downloadlink here.

The hive is severely damaged, missing a lot of keys and values. Do you have a backup which we might use as a source ?

I have other machines with 2016 that are updated
And I also have 3 others like this with the same error

No machines are identical. There is no partial or full backup available for the machine in this thread ?

No sorry, he last successful update was in May 2023 on this machine

Please do following:

FRST File Search
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Copy and paste SOFTWARE into the Search box and click the Search Files button.
  4. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'Search.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also.
  5. Close Notepad and attach the file 'Search.txt' to your next reply.

There is a backup created in Jan 2018. Lets see if that is usable.

Retrieve Software Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack and locate the SOFTWARE file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named SOFTWARE.ZIP on your desktop.
4. Upload the zip file (SOFTWARE.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer.
5. Note: Send the downloadlink in a private message as the SOFTWARE hive contains sensitive information!

Hi Peter,

I can't copy the file as it says it is being used in another process as the attached print indicates

Okay, that worked but that SOFTWARE hive is also corrupted.
I removed the attached SOFTWARE hive from your post for security reasons as it contains sensitive information.

The best and quickest solution is to perform a fresh installation.

But that's what I can't do because it's a critical server, besides being in Azure. If it were a VM I would have already done an in-place repair or update but since it's in Azure I can't do that.

Is there no way to recover the machine to be able to install the latest updates?
