Having trouble with Windows Update on a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine. Requesting help from a volunteer helper.

The issue is with the Security Monthly Quality Rollups - have tried a bunch of them. Seem to install at first but after reboot, the update shows as 'failed'. Other Windows Updates work fine. I read somewhere, installing an earlier standalone security update might help but with the Monthly Rollups but the standalone security update also failed to install when I tried it.

From troubleshooting myself, my hunch is that this post is relevant to my issue but I have not been able to solve the issue: Unable to Install KB4556846 on Server 2012 R2

SFC Scan - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
DISM - The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully.
ComponentsScanner - log attached.
CBS Logs - attached.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Could you please provide the following file: %systemroot%\Inf\setupapi.dev.log.

Thanks, could you please provide your SYSTEM hive using the following instructions:

Retrieve SYSTEM Hive
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SYSTEM.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on the file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

The SYSTEM Hive is attached.

The compressed file was only about 5mb so I am providing it in my reply rather than providing an external link.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Afterwards, please attempt to update again and post the setupapi.dev.log along with the CBS log(s) if it fails.

Attached is the log. The log shows errors.

I got an error from FRST "failed to update (1)" but when I tried it again it seemed to work and saved the log to the Desktop.

The update will fail again because FRST wasn't able to run due to permissions issues, could you please try the SFCFixScript attached below?

SFCFixScript.txt
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Could you please query the key we imported, I just want to ensure that it imported successfully:

Rich (BB code):
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverInfFiles\usbport.inf

This is what I get:

Code:
PS C:\Windows\System32> reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverInfFiles\usbport.inf

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverInfFiles\usbport.inf
    (Default) REG_MULTI_SZ usbport.inf_amd64_38e8e500c4e5d5f3

OC.Dev.NT\0ROOTHUB.Dev.NT\0OHCI_NEC.Dev.NT\0OHCI_NOCC.Dev.NT

PS C:\Windows\System32>

Looks good, could you please attempt to install an update again? If it fails, then please provide the CBS log and the setupapi.dev.log as before.

Could you please load your DRIVERS hive using the following command:

Rich (BB code):
reg load HKLM\DRIVERS %systemroot%\system32\config\DRIVERS

Once it has successfully been loaded, then please execute the attached SFCFixScript using the same instructions as before.
