[SOLVED] Windows Server 2008 R2 - Failing to install KB3191566 and KB4519976

Hi,

We wanted to install WMF 5.1 on our 2008 R2 server because we need a higher version of Powershell. After we launched the install the first time around, the server hard crashed. Upon reboot, trying to reinstall the KB3191566 returns an error.

The first test we did was to complete Windows Updates, which installed 2019-09 CU but 2019-10 CU failed. After updates, KB3191566 hasn't worked either.

We installed and ran SURT and SFCFix without any result either.

Here are the CBS.log, WindowsUpdate.log, SFCFix.txt, CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log in a zip.

Any way to fix this issue?

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Export CBS hive

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
Once selected, click File > Export....
Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (.).
Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
If the file is too large to upload here, upload to Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Unfortunately the file you have sent is in a .reg format so I cannot use it.

Please follow the instructions in post #3 again and ensure that when exporting the file change the save as type to Registry Hive Files (.)

Please do the following.

Install Update with DISM

Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4343900-x64.cab.zip.
Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Keep the defaults and click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4343900-x64.cab\Windows6.1-KB4343900-x64.cab
You should receive the message:
The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.
Run SURT again and post the CheckSUR.log.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Hi Riverdma

Please do the following.

Step #1 - FRST Fix

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
Run SURT again and post the CheckSUR.log.

Hi Bruce,

KB4519976 installed correctly. Then I took a snapshot (To revert back to the current state in case it failed) and installed KB3191566 succesfully. This server is going to be closed in less than 3 months and all we really needed was KB3191566 to run a special powershell script on it before decomission.
