Windows Can't Update error

Hello,

I am having all kinds of problems with my Windows 10 PC. My computer is set for auto updates but the latest update (several weeks ago) is not able to complete. The machine gives a constant "We Couldn't update" message, the reverts back and restarts. I can't even shutdown or put to sleep the computer. I'm attaching the SFCFix.txt which seems to have also ran into a lot of issues and the services.txt files.

I have tried these without success in resolving the issue:

- Run DISM
- Run SFC /Scannow
- Running SFCFix

I've attached the CBS.zip, ComponentsScanner.txt, services.txt and SFCFix.txt files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and please let me know if there's anything else needed.

Cheers.

Mik

p.s. Sorry, this was posted twice. I accidentally first posted in the Malware > software updates forum.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Which update (KB-number) cannot be installed? However it seems there's a problem with the EFI partition which causes the rollback.

Hi,

Download the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  • Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Note: Ensure that the List BCD check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.

  • Press the Scan button.
  • Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  • Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi,

Please follow the instructions below to recreate the EFI partition, but first make always a backup / system image!

Boot the computer using a USB-stick into the RE environment and open the command prompt.

1. Run the following commands.
2. Replace 0 with the actual number for the HDD/SSD where your Windows is installed.
Rich (BB code):
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
list partition
3. Then run the following command and replace 1 with the actual number for the Windows OS partition.
Rich (BB code):
select partition 1
4. The following commands will resize the Windows OS partition and create a new EFI partition.
Rich (BB code):
shrink desired=100
create partition efi size=100
format quick fs=fat32
assign letter=w
5. Run the following commands
Code:
list partition
list volume
6. Note the drive letter where the Windows OS is installed, which is displayed after running list volume.
7. Close diskpart with the following command
Code:
exit
8. Run the following command: Replace X with the volume letter of the Windows OS partition.
Code:
bcdboot X:\windows /s W:
9. Now the BCDBoot copies the boot files from the Windows partition into the EFI System partition and re-create the BCD store in the same partition.

For this, it sounds like I will need to make a bootable USB stick ("Boot the computer using a USB-stick into the RE environment and open the command prompt.")?

What's the best way to create the bootable USB?

Thanks so much!!

Thank you so much for all of your help Maxstar. I successfully completed the steps detailed above. Is there anything else I should need to do? I tried doing the Windows update again and it still got to about 99% before giving me the "We Couldn't update" message.

Thanks in advance for any additional help you can offer.

Hi,

Please attach the latest CBS logs.

Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply. If the file is too large to attach, upload the CBS.zip file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Please do the following again.

Download the

Hi,

Unfortunately, FRST is still reporting the same issue. So could you please provide a screenshot of Disk Management. Open the startmenu and type diskmgmt.msc and maximize this windows to take a screenshot of it.

Here is the Disk Management Screenshot:

Hi,

That's strange, because FRST reported several Bitlocker issues.

Rich (BB code):
System errors:

Download

Crystal DiskInfo and save it to your Desktop.
  • Run the installer to install the program.
  • When finished, open the installed program by double clicking on it.
    • Good - There are no problems found, the drive is working properly.
    • Caution - The drive have some problems. (which indicates a drive that you should most likely be thinking about backing up and replacing.)
    • Bad - This usually indicates a drive that’s dead or near death. (! - Back up all important data as soon as possible.)
  • Resize the window so that all information is visible.
  • Take a screenshot of what you see and post it in your next reply.

Thanks again for your continued assistance. Should I be doing any of your recommended steps in Safe Mode or anything like that?

Please run Check Disk (CHKDSK).
  • Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.
    Code:
    chkdsk c: /r
  • At the question "Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)", press Y.
  • Restart your computer, now CHKDSK will start automatically.
  • Wait for this to complete. Please note that this may take several hours. Let it run even if it looks like the process has stopped!
  • On completion, the system will restart automatically.
