Windows BSOD on wakeup - can't find dump files

Hi everyone!

I'm having problems with my HTPC bluescreening after waking it up after putting it in sleep mode. This happens consistently everyone time I've had the computer in sleep mode. It is a pretty fresh install and I know it didn't behave this way after I first installed it so some driver has since then messed it up.

First of all, I don't know if this is a real "BSOD". I get the sad smiley and everything but the reboot goes really fast and all programs and windows are as before the reboot. Doesn't feel like a real reboot to me. Is this a feature of Windows 8 perhaps?

I've searched for windows\memory.dmp and after windows\minidump , but neither exists. I've googled quite a bit and have tried several actions to try to activate the logging but to no success. Nothing is shown in the eventlog. I'm not sure if the information I've found is out of date or not so I'm not going to list the steps I've already tried for now.

So, any suggestions on why I can't find a dump file or any trace from the BSOD? I just want a quick peek to try to figure out what's causing it.

That typically indicates a driver issue, probably the display card drivers. I would advise uninstalling your display card adapter drivers through Device Manager, making sure to Delete driver software for this device, and then restart the computer to let Windows install the best drivers automatically. Windows 8 has very good driver support, and it should be able to find the appropriate drivers for your devices.

If that fails, even without a blue screen, the reports from the BSOD Posting Instructions can be very helpful to us to find problems with the system.

Let us know how the driver uninstall and Windows driver install goes. Best wishes it improves stability.

I did uninstall AMD Catalyst drivers, although not using the Device Manager. I restarted and it did change the display settings so the drivers seemed correctly uninstalled (I assume Windows 8 default drivers were used at this point). The problem remained though so I later reinstalled the AMD Catalyst drivers. I will get back to you as soon as I get a chance to follow the BSOD Posting Instructions.

While not sure about Windows 8, I know some people have had problems similar to this in Windows Vista/7 involving certain hybrid sleep modes like hibernation. You can use the instructions here to turn off hibernation.
