I was trying to install windows updates but came across an error message that read Windows Update error 0x80070057. I proceeded to run the Windows Update Diagnostic tool and it detects missing or corrupt files. It says :[TABLE="class: info"]
[TR]
[TD]SFC Output[/TD]
[/TR]
[TR]
[TD][TABLE="class: info"]
[TR]
[TH]Output:[/TH]
[TD="class: b1"]Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.[/TD]
[/TR]

I attached my CBS.log. If I could get help with this I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Version 6.2.9200.16384 indicates that the files are from Windows 8 RTM, so I should be able to grab them off a disc. I still run Windows 7 so I don't have direct access to these files, but I will download the ISO and extract them for you :) It will have to be done tomorrow evening though because I'm working all day tomorrow and my connection isn't fast enough to download the ISO tonight.

Hi jj247,

The download speed really dropped and is now chugging away at 50KB/s so I'm afraid this will have to wait until the morning, sorry for the further delay! I have asked for one of our Windows 8 users here can send me the files which will hopefully be faster.

Hi jj247,

One of our members here, Tekno Venus, has very kindly uploaded the folder for us. Now for the fix!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a files should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Hi jj247,

Great, that's repaired everything. Now to finish the job with SFC!

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

For some reason the upload keeps failing. I restarted my computer and it was configuring updates, but I still am unable to upload the txt file. Is there anything else I can do?

I'm so confused as to why this won't upload. My internet is fine and I'm even plugged in with an ethernet cable. So close but this is getting very frustrating. I appreciate the help so much which is why I don't want to waste your time.

Hi jj247,

Ah, I see. Your CBS log is ~60MB which is way over the attachment size limit so that's probably why it failed :)

Something very odd is going on here! SFC seems to think that nearly every file on your computer is corrupt :confused2: How old is this computer? Either your hard drive is on the point of failing or Windows has gone crazy.

This is a brand new gaming laptop for college. It has the newest haswell processors and everything... im so confused. What should I do? It seems to work fine..

Hi jj247,

Hmm, I can't quite believe SFC then! Let's double check, with SFC and dism:

Command Prompt

  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command(s) into it, press enter after each

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Zip this up and attach it if it is small enough, if not then upload it to SendSpace again please.

Tom

Hi jj247,

Well that's a relief! SFC has gone back to normal now, and dism is reporting no problems:

Code:
=================================
Checking System Update Readiness.

Summary:
Operation: Detect and Repair
Operation result: 0x0
Last Successful Step: Entire operation completes.
Total Detected Corruption:	0
	CBS Manifest Corruption:	0
	CBS Metadata Corruption:	0
	CSI Manifest Corruption:	0
	CSI Metadata Corruption:	0
	CSI Payload Corruption:	0
Total Repaired Corruption:	0
	CBS Manifest Repaired:	0
	CSI Manifest Repaired:	0
	CSI Payload Repaired:	0
	CSI Store Metadata refreshed:	True

Total Operation Time: 208 seconds.

I'm still not quite sure what made it throw such a wobbly last time but I guess we'll never know!

You're all good to go now :)
