Hello there. I've been trying to update Windows 8, but I keep getting the error code mentioned above.

I ran SFC /scannow and all I get is "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I also ran SFCFix and here are the results:

I'm attaching the CBS and DISM files, and the components file is here: https://db.tt/ufn8Eols

Re: Trouble with Windows 8 Update (Code 800703F1)

Hello and welcome to Sysnative forums :)

The error that you are getting at the moment is due to the Windows update COMPONENTS hive not loading:
Code:
2014-10-29 18:14:35, Info CBS Failed to load the COMPONENTS hive from 'C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS' into registry key 'HKLM\COMPONENTS'. [HRESULT = 0x800703f1 - ERROR_BADDB]
2014-10-29 18:14:35, Info CBS Failed to load component store [HRESULT = 0x800703f1 - ERROR_BADDB]
2014-10-29 18:14:35, Info CSI 00000004 GetSystemStore called without loading components hive

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config you should be able to see a file called COMPONENTS and many others that start with the name COMPONENTS, can you please put them all into a zip file and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

Thanks

Alex

Thank you, Alex! I already uploaded the components file with my original post (Oct 29), here: https://db.tt/ufn8Eols
Please let me know if you need a new components file. Thank you again!

Re: Trouble with Windows 8 Update (Code 800703F1)

Thank you tadel.

Taking a quick look at the COMPONENTS hive there appears to be some sort of corruption somewhere inside of it as it is not letting me load the hive at all. I will take a further look tomorrow to see if I can work out who it is not loading.

Thanks

Hello again,

I am afraid I have some bad news for you, looking over the registry hive I was unable to work out why this is showing as corrupt or how to fix it. This is issue with the COMPONENTS hive that occurs from time to time. The bad news is that there is not currently a fix for this issue, the only we we currently have of fixing this one up is by doing a fresh install of Windows. You may have luck doing a repair install but most the time this will not resolve the issue and will require a fresh install of windows.

We (the Windows Update staff here at Sysnative) are currently researching and looking into this to try and work out a way to resolve this without a complete re-install, but it is still in early stages of research.

Alex
