I have been experiencing an odd issue. When my Windows 8 PC starts up, it will show the Windows panes without the loading animation and remain stuck there indefinitely.

I have a strong feeling that this has to do with Windows 8 and it's kernel hibernation... The PC experiences no difficulty starting from cold boot (reset when stuck, or restart, or full shut-down). It will only hang from a normal startup... (Kernel in hibernation, load drivers and user profile only). This is rendering Windows 8 quick-boot useless for me.

This issue began a few months ago and is one of the main reasons that I chose to perform a fresh (clean) installation. My previous installation was an upgrade over Windows 7.

Things I have done to attempt to resolve the issue.

  • Update the UEFI (BIOS).
  • Check my boards power settings.
  • Reinstall Windows

I was just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing similar issues?

There is one other, minor, issue that I have been having recently... My Netflix app has been failing to work... I don't have the exact error ATM... When watching Netflix in the desktop environment (IE and Chrome) Silverlight will crash after about 30-60 seconds of playback.

Other than that, I have been having no issues whatsoever with my installation.

I will let you all know if I find anything else out or figure out what is causing these issues.

Have you tried turning off the fast startup feature through the power options in Windows 8?

  1. Right click the lower left corner.

  2. Choose Control Panel

  3. Select System and Security

  4. Select Power Options

  5. Select Choose what the power buttons do

  6. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable

  7. Uncheck the box to Turn on fast startup (recommended)

I was thinking more along the lines or turning it off to find out whether it is definitely related to the boot problem. The step wasn't meant as a fix. :-}

Also, does your BIOS have a fast boot feature involving a mini-SSD on the motherboard?

Aha, a misunderstanding. Yes, previous to reinstallation I had disabled fast boot and had no issues.

And, no... My board does not have the SSD fast boot option.

Interestingly, when I first installed and re-installed W8, I did not have this issue... I am wondering if an update or hot-fix may have caused it...

That is interesting. I had a similar experience in Windows 8 Consumer Preview five months ago.

I had a problem with my HP desktop system in which the SD cards would cause the fast boot feature to fail during the hibernation sequence on Shut Down. It did not occur when I first installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but an update within Consumer Preview made it occur again. The problem has not occurred with Windows 8 Pro installed, so I can only assume Microsoft fixed that particular issue.
