[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 x64 Pro - unable to install KB3185911

Hello,
I'm unable to install KB3185911 for Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center (Error Code 80073712). Before that, I was also unable to install KB3177725 (same error 80073712). (note: KB3185911 supersedes KB3177725).

Both of those updates patch some files in common, if that helps narrow down anything:

win32k.sys
win32k.ptxml
wow64_win32k.ptxml

Other updates have been successfully installed without issues (e.g. the other updates from September's patch cycle)

Fixes previously attempted:
  • Downloading and installing via Windows Update. (fails with Error Code 80073712)
  • Downloading stand-alone update package and installing via Microsoft Download Center (fails with Error Code 80073712) (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3185911)
  • chkdsk /r on all connected drives - all good. (No SMART errors either)
  • Virus / Malware Scans (All clean)
  • Windows Update Troubleshooter for Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7. (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab)
  • Manually Resetting Windows Update Components with "Reset Windows Update Agent" from Microsoft TechNet (TechNet Reset Windows Update Agent)
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  • sfc /scannow
  • SFCFix.exe

Did some further digging. Even though sfc /scannow, and SFCFix don't report errors, I do see many instances of STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT in CBS.log.
I'm uploading a new CBS.log along with a separate file with all non-duplicate instances of STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT.

Common denominator seems to be a problem with this:

I'm going to run Memtest86 later, but I can't think of anything else to check other than that. This computer's RAM passed ~48 hours of memtest86 when we first built it, but haven't ran that since.
 
Status update: Memtest86 ran without problems.

win32k.sys 6.3.9600.17114 appears to have been installed as part of KB2962409 - June 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2

So I tried to uninstall KB2962409 thinking that this (problematic?) version of win32k.sys was part of an optional KB and has been superseded multiple times anyway. (Discard/reverse the update/files that weren't needed in the first place) However, uninstalling fails and I see familiar error messages in cbs.log:

I installed Windows 8.1 x64 Pro in a VM using my Media Creation Tool iso. Still curious if my problem is with amd64_microsoft-windows-win32k_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17114_none_a9fd6ea56e452bf0\win32k.sys, so I installed KB2962409 in the VM (auto-updates disabled, no other updates installed). During the post-install reboot, I had 3 separate BSODs (in the VM) before Windows finally loaded. Nirsoft BlueScreenView says all three were 0x0000003b SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION in ntoskrnl.exe. I then uninstalled KB2962409 successfully and reinstalled KB2962409 again, this time without any BSODs.

The following registry values are from the VM, and are somewhat different compared to those on my troubled PC. (My PC's values are in this post https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-install-kb3185911-post168527.html#post168527)

So, this is something that is unexpected and seems odd to me, but might be normal Windows behavior.
I downloaded Windows8.1-KB2962409-x64.msu and used 'expand' to unpack it. I then expanded Windows8.1-KB2962409-x64.cab to C:\Windows8.1-KB2962409-x64.cab\. Compared these unpacked files to local files. Thoughts?

Huzzah! Update KB3185911 was successfully installed. I was also able to finally install October's big security rollup update, which had previously failed with the same win32k 0x80073712 component store errors.

I also did the following things after installing the missing updates:

  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

I think we're good now! Was very concerning to have un-installable security patches, especially with Microsoft's new decision to release big rollup updates vs multiple individual updates. This had caused me to miss a whole month's worth of security updates in one fell swoop, instead of just missing 1/x updates.

Out of curiosity / for future reference, what was the general process for replacing those two registry keys+entries? After analyzing CBS,etc logs to get an idea of what files/registry keys/packages are causing problems, do you then have to source fixes from known-good images/installations? It's so odd that Microsoft's own tool to fix component store corruption doesn't/can't properly fix some corruptions. You guys here at Sysnative are miracle workers. :)

That's what we do. If we don't have the files/keys/values, we find out from which KB they come from, install it in a VM and then source what we need (we also force the installation via DISM if it cannot be installed via the .msu). If we need files, we simply extract them from the .msu, but keys/values are different.
