What made you install 8.1 as a new install rather than an upgrade?

What about the keycode?

I went though this with Windows 8 9200 only to later realize that the DVD did not burn correctly.

I thought that may be the case here with 8.1, so I then burned to USB - same result. . . keycode required to install.

So basically 8.1 is not for free. How much lamer can Microsoft get. Basically from what I understood it's a paid graphical update.

No, I don't think so??? It's definitely free - both the preview and the final version when released. Despite the preview version claiming to be an evaluation copy (presumably just because it's easier to put it into evalulation mode rather than coding up some new preview mode), the final version will still be free, and it actually makes quite a few changes (personally, I am not bothered by the start menu/button issue, but I did have a few other niggles with Windows 8 and they've all been fixed in 8.1 so I'm really happy :) )

Yes, but it's not called a service pack because it has a larger scope than a service pack usually has.

That's what I was intending to do for my step-brother on his Windows 8 laptop, but I'm staying with Windows 7 until 2020.

Why 2020?

I've always found the Windows 8 start menu fine - not perfect, but a lot of its features are a lot faster than using the Windows 7 start menu. Using the corner to launch the start menu is a lot faster than using the start button in Windows 7.

Windows 8 is still unpredictable. My friends "The Sims 3" game even with windows 8 patches still behaves weird.

2020 is window 7's end of support. I'm with bluerobot on this one.

I'd be hesitant to say that was the fault of MS. Software not working correctly, especially games, is generally the fault of the software provider, rather than the OS itself. With the Sims 3, we're also talking about EA here - how much time and money do you think they put into the Windows 8 patch despite few new sales because of it? They're not a company renowned for their dedication to high quality support and maintaining older games.

We're talking about 5 windows 8 patches. Mostly with the os's gui. The others were for gpu support drivers becuase the texture engine couldn't detect a graphics card. Either way, regardless of who is at fualt. Until EA and MS, including graphics card drivers and game engines are built for Windows 8. I'm sticking to windows 7. Sure, this is a tricky subject. Games are finicky, even with patches they can't be expected to run perfect.

Windows 8.1 is a improvement, and I understand that Windows 8 is technically better than Windows 7, but what's the point in trying to make Windows 8 more like Windows 7? When Windows 7 still is receiving support and I still have a perfectly working Windows 7?
