Hi !

I've been trying to repair my friend's laptop for hours... He told me twindows update has not worked correctly since months... In fact I would say for years, since windows SP1 update never installed !!
I've tried all the solutions I know to solve Windows Update problems (microsoft fix it, deleting softwareDistribution directory, check the services needed by windows update...)
As a result, the situation is a bit better, since windows update now accepts installing a few newer updates... but still not SP1. Even standalone installation doesn't work.
The error logged is TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE 0x800b0100.

I'm a little desesperate... I'm found your forum and SFCFix utility...
Could you help me ?

Here's the logs :

Packs.zip

Hi Aura,

Thanx a lot for your reply.
I've got a problem with the Packs.zip archive : I don't see any attached file in your post, when I click on Packs.zip link, it seems it's broken...
Could you please reload the attachment !?

Regards.

Hi again !
Works better, thanx a lot !
I will install the files, run SURT and post the result log the evening.

Hi again !

I've just launched SURT and here's the resulting log.
It looks like all problems are fixed.
Anything else to check ?

Yes, we need to run a SFC scan and see if there's anything to address there :)

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Looks like SFC returned a clean CBS.log. Now, can you try to install the Windows Updates? If they fail, upload the two files below for me to review please.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Hello !

Windows Update has downloaded and installed SP1 with success (in fact, it has detected and installed it twice, then it was OK), then asked for a Windows Update engine update, which was made with success too...
I'll check if it has detected more recent updates to install this evening when I come back from work...
Windows Update seems to be in far better shape than before you helped me ;)

That's excellent news :) Let me know how it goes!

Hi again !

I've left the laptop running since this morning with after having clicked on "Check updates" button on Windows Update window...
When I've checked it about 8 hours later, the situation had not evolved at all : "Searching for updates" messages was still present...
I cancelled the process, tried to restart it, and got a 0X8024402F error. I tried to apply Microsoft Fixit utility and run the windows update troubleshooting tool available in configuration panel, with no significant result... The error disappeared, but windows update is back to "infinite loop" searching...

Any idea ?

Follow the instructions below please.

Hello !

Thanx for that quick answer !
I've applied your solution, Windows Update is presently downloading about 165 important updates, almost 900 Mo...
I'll keep you informed of the final result...

Alright :) If it ever fails, upload the following files for me please.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Hello !

I think everything is all right now, because WU has made the 165 updates during the last night (to be more precise, 163 were OK, 2 failed, but succeeded after I relaunched update search).
Since this morning, it has found at least 30 new updates, without a failure during installation...
I carry on checking updates until windows is up to date.

A big big thank you from my friend who will not recognize his laptop !;)
Regards !

No problem ledams, you're welcome :) And yes, if you started from a "fresh" Windows 7 install, you have around 300 Windows Update to install so carry on! :P
