Assistance is greatly appreciated. Here's the situation: I've got a client with a Windows 7 x64 SP1 desktop that according to Windows Update History it seems has been unable to apply Windows Updates since September. I've run SFC /scannow and it found nothing to correct. I've run SFCFix.exe and the log is attached here. I've archived the CBS folder and since it's very large (1.07 GB) I'm following the instructions to upload it with SFCFix right after posting this. I hope that works.

In researching this issue, I downloaded the latest (Oct 2014) System Update Readiness Tool and ran it several times. It always comes up with the same 9 corruptions that it cannot fix. From the CheckSUR.persist log file it seems that all 9 corrupt files are coming from 3 Windows Updates - KB2894844, KB2973112 and KB2982378. From a MS document (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2700601), I downloaded those three standalone update MSU files and placed all of them in the %WINDOWS%\Temp\CheckSUR folder. I re-ran the SUR tool and looked at the log and it was unable to fix the corruption. I tried running the SUR tool with each of the three update MSU files in the CheckSUR folder individually and it still could not fix any corruption. I'm not sure where to go from here. I suppose the next thing to try is to get a hold of a known good Win7 SP1 install that has those applied and copy the .mum and .cat files into the appropriate folders and try to get it fixed that way, but I do not readily have access to one.

Thank you so much for your time and expertise!

Tim

Hi utec :)

So far I can see that you only attached the SFCFix.txt, not the CBS folder. Follow the instructions below so we can get a fresh CheckSUR.log.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;
  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit (x64)
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Sorry about that, that's really what I was afraid of when using that SFCFix tool to upload the compressed CBS folder - that it wouldn't work correctly. Oh well, I've started uploading it to a Google Drive that I'll post a link to when that's finished. In the meantime, I've attached both CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log here.

All good, don't worry about it :) Now, follow the instructions below please.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Fix
Follow the instructions below to fix the errors reported by the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT);
  • Download the attached archive file, Packs.zip and save it on your Desktop;
  • Once it's downloaded, right-click on it and select Extract All...;
  • Check the Show extracted files when complete checkbox, and click on Extract;
  • On completion, a folder will open with two folders inside it, Manifests and Packages;
    • Copy and paste the files of the Manifests folder (if there are any) inside C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests
    • Copy and paste the files of the Packages folder (if there are any) inside C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\servicing\Packages
  • Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again;
  • On completion, attach the log located at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply;
Packs.zip

Aura,

Thank you very much for the packs.zip file, I think that solved it. Here's the latest CheckSUR.log file and CheckSUR.persist.log file after running the System Update Readiness Tool again with the files in place. It looks like they were all repaired, I'm going to try running Windows Update to see if it'll go now.

Looks like they weren't attached in your previous post :) And yes, please let me know how it goes.

I realized that I forgot to attach and did it right away, but you still beat me to it!

It indeed looks like the SURT fix worked. Now let me know if the Windows Updates are installing or not.

I had success installing Windows Updates. 13 of 14 installed, the only one that failed so far is KB2973112 . I need to restart the client's computer to finish installing the 13 updates and I know that I won't be able to reconnect to it right away. There's still several more that need installing after the reboot. I'll have to keep you posted but many, many thanks for your help so far!

No problem utec you're welcome :) Let me know how it goes.

That worked! Thank you so much for your time and expertise! There are no updates left to apply, I'm going to mark this as solved :)

No problem utec, you're welcome! :)
