Hi, I'm having trouble with Windows Update on a Windows 7 computer.

Can't get updates to install and the errors that display at the end of the process are 80073712 & 9C59.

I've tried the following:

1. Ran SFCFix (No errors)

2. Ran CHKDSK (No errors)

3. Ran SFC /SCANNOW (No errors)

4. Ran 'System Readiness Tool' (Hotfix KB947821 installed)

5. Ran 'Windows Update Diagnostics Hotfix' and it displayed the following:

(Windows Update Error 0x80073712 - Not Fixed)
(Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed)
(Problems installing recent updates - Fixed)
(Problems installing recent updates - Fixed) (Yes, repeated same line again)

I use Eset NOD32 Antivirus and I've excluded the 'SoftwareDistribution' folder from being scanned and even tried disabling the Antivirus altogether.

I've got no idea what else to try? It's driving me insane! Any help would be immensely appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Have dealt with several issues with Win7x64 update and with due diligence have resolved them all. I'll try to help you. The checkSUR.log has much more information than you posted. Did you save the checkSUR.log or the checkSUR.persist.log? If so attach them to your reply. If you didn't save it, it is most likely deleted by now. If that's the case run SURT again and post the logs. Your SFCfix.txt shows no issues

checkSUR.log and checkSUR.persist.log are located at C:\Windows\Temp If they are no longer there you will have to run SURT again. These files are saved to a TEMP (temporary file) & as such do no remain on your computer. I have a batch file you can run to copy them to desktop if you wish. To create a batch file open text editor, copy and paste code in, save to desktop as checkSUR.bat. To save file as bat in save popup Save as type change .txt to All Files (*.*) or save to desktop as .txt and then right-click file and rename .txt to .bat. Either process will work. Here's the batch file code:

COPY C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log %AllUsersProfile%\Desktop

pause

COPY C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log %AllUsersProfile%\Desktop

pause

I tried earlier to upload the required files via the "large file uploader" but it kept failing. Have now successfully uploaded them.

Thanks very much.

Hi mojave :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Let's run SURT again but this time, let's grab the log.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;
  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is:
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Hi Aura

Thanks for taking the time to look at my problem, it's very much appreciated.

I've attached the CheckSUR.log but there wasn't much in it?

I've also added the persist.log too if that helps?

Alright, there's nothing in the CheckSUR.log. Now you say that SFC returned a message similar to "No integrity violation were found", is that right?

Hi, yes that's right.

It simply comes up with, "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

Alright, try to install your Windows Update again. As soon as they fail, upload the following files for me to review.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I have uploaded the CBS.log file via the "Large File Uploader".

Unfortunately I get an error when I try to upload my WindowsUpdate.log via the normal method. It states it's too big (1.3MB).

How would I upload this via the "Large File Uploader"?

Put both files in a folder and .zip it, then upload it on Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive and post the download URL here.

Here's the problem:

I'll need your COMPONENTS Hive to create the fix, follow the instructions below please.

Retrieving the COMPONENTS Hive
Follow the instructions below to retrieve your COMPONENTS Hive and send me it.
  • Open your Windows Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder;
  • In this folder, find the COMPONENTS file (there's no extension), and copy it to your Desktop;
    Note: If you receive an error message saying that the COMPONENTS file is in use, restart your computer and try again. If the error message persist, let me know.
  • Right-click on it, and select Send to... and choose Compressed (zipped) folder;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;

Sadly I have bad news for you. If you want to solve your Windows Update issues, you'll need to do a repair install. Here's your issue:

See the number of keys (folders) under Deployments and Components? That's far from being enough. You're supposed to have hundreds of keys there, close to a thousand. It's impossible for me to know which keys you are missing and to add them all. The only way to get out of this situation is to run a repair install on your Windows 7.

Do you still have your Windows 7 installation media?

Unfortunately I don't have the Windows 7 installation disc.

I looked up the procedure involved for a Repair Install and can see I'd probably lose a lot of settings.

I guess I'll have to decide if I should purchase another Windows 7 disc and do a full install or just go to Windows 8.1?

Just one question.

What's the most likely cause of the missing keys?

Could it be from using a REG cleaner or similar program?

Thanks.

A Registry Cleaner is able to create a such mess, yes. I would say that a corrupt or failing hard drive could also cause this.

Do you have a retail copy of Windows 7 (bought in store), or an OEM one (which came preinstalled on your laptop/computer)?

Unfortunately I don't have either the retail or OEM disc for Windows 7.

If I buy a Windows 7 disc from one of my local stores, could I do a "repair install" on my system or would I be better off starting from scratch?
