Hi,

I've been going out of my mind trying to fix this and hopefully you guys can help!

I've been experiencing several issues, that I'm starting to think is linked with an underline issue.

Windows Update - 80072F8F
I've tried all of the different suggestions out there, from checking the time has synced correctly to checking for issues with BITS. (Other PCs/users on my home network can do this fine, same with below)

I can't seem to access any https websites using IE, however on Chrome they work fine.

I have issues logging into things like Razer Synapse & Origin, both saying they cannot connect despite having a working connection.

Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Your issues all sound related.

Can you have a quick flick through this old thread: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4775-windows-update-error-80072f8f.html

It might give you an idea for what sort of things I am going to be doing. Your issue is very similar.

OK, so:

Please open an elevated Command Prompt: How to start an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista

and carefully type, pressing enter after each line:

net start w32time
w32tm /resync

Do you get any errors on either of these lines? To copy and paste an error from the Command Prompt, right click on the Command Prompt, and select Mark. Drag a square around the text you want to copy, and right click again. Now you have copied the data to be right click and pasted here, if necessary.

Then, can you please provide CBS logs: Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions

Thank you,

Richard

Merry Christmas,

Thanks for helping! :)

Forgot to mention I'm using Win 7 64bit.

I tried both commands and had an error with the second line as per below;
C:\Windows\system32>net start w32time
The Windows Time service is starting.
The Windows Time service was started successfully.

C:\Windows\system32>w32tm /resync
Sending resync command to local computer
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

Many thanks,

Most problems with IE are caused by a bad or misbehaving add-on. Have you tried running IE without add-ons? Or better yet, have you Reset IE (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Reset...)?

Hello again :)

That error code may not be bad news. More on this later. Firsty, right click on the system clock > Adjust Date & Time, and confirm that both the date and time are correct to within a couple of minutes. Also please make sure that your time zone is correct.

Then, please open this website in Internet Explorer: Microsoft Update Catalog

You may need to jump through some hoops and install some controls to be able to use the website.

Then please add this update to the basket: Microsoft Update Catalog

View your basket: Microsoft Update Catalog

and download the update. Once it has downloaded, double click on the .exe. Absolutely nothing will appear to happen. It has no graphical interface. Just double click on it once or twice to make sure it worked, and retry and let me know the status of Windows Update.

Thank you,

Richard

Hi Richard,

The time and zone were correct.
Installed the updated root certificates.

Unfortunately same error with windows update.

Thanks,

If you set the date and time, then shut down and unplug the computer from the wall overnight (or, if equipped, set the master power switch on the back of the power supply to off), is the date and time still correct in the morning? If not, shutdown and unplug again, open the case and touch bare metal to discharge any static in your body and carefully pull the CMOS battery. It is likely a CR2032 or equivalent and they are available at most battery/watch/camera counters. Take old battery with you as most counters recycle. Do not touch the new battery with bare fingers as skin oils promote corrosion and attract dust. Be sure to touch bare metal again, before reaching in to insert new battery.

Upon first boot, immediately enter the BIOS Setup Menu to reset date and time, and verify your drive information and boot order are correct, then Save and Exit to boot normally and try again.

If still no good, I might suggest running sfc /scannow (note the space before the slash).

I'd taken the plunge and just re-installed windows, all working again!

Thanks for taking the time to try and help guys!

Thanks for letting us know. I am sorry it came to this, but I am very glad that your computer is working well now.
