Dear Sirs,

My Windows 7 (64bit) system will not install downloaded updates. Have installed and run the MS Windows Update Troubleshooter which fixed some problems but produced one update error - Ox80070057.

I have tried to do a system restore from a system image (using Windows backup & restore tool) but this fails.
I have downloaded your SFCFix tool, but in view of the programs warnings about malware infections and the sytem restore failure, have not run this yet.
I regularly update and run Avast antivirus (free version) and Malwarebytes, but neither of these indicate a problem.

Thanks in avance for any help you can give.
Dave.

Hello and Welcome!

Let's start with the System Update Readiness Tool.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool for your version of Windows here: System Update Readiness Tool

NOTE: If you aren't sure if your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, check here: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

This tool will take some time to complete - when it has finished, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

View attachment SFCFix.zip

Once SFCFix has finished, run the System Update Readiness Tool again.
When SURT has completed, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Looks like something didn't work out.

Please be sure to download the SFCFix zip file here: sfcfix.zip
You do not need to extract the zip file.
Drag the downloaded SFCFix.zip file onto SFCFix.exe

SFCFix should then run the fix script and produce SFCFix.txt on your desktop.

Attach this file (SFCFix.txt) with your reply.

Since carrying out the fix, my system has improved but the Update system is not fully functional.
On shutting down and restarting the computer, Windows update automatically downloaded 17 important updates and installed just a few of them:
The security updates for Microsoft Office (2007) installed, but the security updates for Windows all failed. Although Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - October 2016 (KB890830) did install.

Since trying this, I have manually re-run Windows update but it does not download any updates in spite of being left to run for several hours.

Hope this helps with the diagnosis and thank you for all your help so far.
Dave.

Thanks for your help.
KB3020369 Reported as already installed.
KB3172605 Installation failed. Tried to access CBS log file but get "Access denied" error. Which is strange - not had that error before.
On checking Update history it says:
Installation failed. Error details: Code 80071A91

Try installing the update that failed again, when it does follow these instructions:

Copy CBS Log

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe; To extract you can right-click your mouse on the GSmartControl.zip file and select Extract.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

As it is a SSD, I doubt that is the source of the problem anyway :)

Is this machine overclocked?

No. I can send you full spec as text file from Piriform Speccy report if it would help, although I doubt it is a hardware problem as the system is not showing any other problems.

Ok, let's check with SFC to see if clearing the transaction log files helped.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

Looks like clearing the transaction logs didn't help.

chkdsk /f
