Hello and Welcome!

Code:
Failed call to CryptCATAdminAddCatalog. [HRESULT = 0x8e5e0408 - JET_errFileAccessDenied]

Have there been any recent changes to this machine such as a new hard drive?
How long have you had Windows installed on this computer?

Thank you for the reply

I've had Windows 7 for about a year; upgraded clean start on new hard drive (older Vista install was not upgraded, drive disconnected during install). Two events happened over the last few months.
  • The first one was related to a crazy windows update that caused MS Outlook to stop working and some other symptoms that I don't remember. I searched the internet, discovered that there was a bad update pushed so I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal (as far as I could tell).
  • The second event was about a month ago or so when my son (10) loaded a 'free' game and he immediately unloaded it when he saw that he was getting permissions type messages. I ran security check and CCleaner in case it was the aborted install that screwed with the permissions or registry. Soon after that is when I started to notice the 'failed' Windows update messages in the update, but I thought it was another failed update that was pushed.

I hope that there is an easy way to correct permissions to a known configuration.

Thank you for your time and effort!

What is the make and model of your computer? I suspect this might be an Intel storage controller problem that could be remedied by updating the driver.

Sorry for the delayed responses; can only get to it after work hours. The computer is an older HP Pavillion with a Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5200 processor @ 2.5GHz and 8GB of RAM.

Thank you...

ZComputerWiz:

I downloaded the drivers, extracted, installed and rebooted. I retried updates and still got fails. After that I created a new administrator account and tried running from there but still get fails. Windows generated a bunch of report files and a zipped the latest set, placed in dropbox location below.

I'm wondering - Should I try to repair the system from my original Window's 7 disk? Will I need to reinstall all my apps?

Kids are doing final reports etc so I don't get to work on this problem consistently. The system updates are backing up now and I'm afraid that the system may become too unstable. I'm thinking about getting another hard drive so that I can backup all files other than USB thumb drives and DVDs.

Hopefully the Windows report can shed some light.

Thank you for the support

Let's try this first:

Run Windows Repairs
  1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
    Extract.JPG
  3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
  4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
  5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

  6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
  7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
  8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
  9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
  10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

    17 - Repair Windows Updates

  11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

  12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

ZComputerWiz:

SOLVED!!!! - I'm writing the details so that it may be useful to others.

I downloaded the tweaking.com application, extracted, installed and rebooted into safe mode. I set the application to perform the "windows update" repairs and restarted into normal operation. I checked for updates and found that the history had been reset. I pressed on check for updates and the system seemed to hang for a long time (over an hour - I aborted). I repeated the operation (safe mode) and restarted but this time I changed the Windows Update settings to download and ask for updates (not auto install). Then I waited for Windows to perform the task (over night). The next day I saw a list of available updates so I proceeded to install one at a time (and reboots as necessary). I switched to the clean - admin only user log-in profile to speed up the restarts. All but 1 update installed the first time (several dozens). The 1 update that failed the first time installed fine after all other updates were installed. Now:
  • All updates are installed AND
  • SFC /scannow produces → NO CORRUPTIONS DETECTED!!!!!!!
