Hey guys,

I'm having a hard time installing SP1 on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Whenever I try, I get the error: 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I've had this problem in the past, and it was solved by completely removing the language pack PT-BR. I tried to do the same thing this time, but to no avail. This is what I've done so far:

- Using regedit, located this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI\UILanguages

- Deleted the PT-BR folder
- Restarted
- Then I was supposed to run LPKSETUP, click on "Uninstall Display Languages" and remove PT-BR. However, when clicking on "Uninstall Display Languages" I get the a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" error:
"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

- I've uninstalled all versions of the C++ Runtime Library, downloaded the new files from Microsoft (2005, 2008, 2010) and reinstalled it.
I still get the same error.

- I've run SFCFix.exe. See below the log.
- I'm also attaching the CBS folder.

If you could please help me out with this, it'll be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello,

Thanks for following up. I have copied the files and run SURT. From the looks of it, it seems like it's fixed the problem. I'll wait for your further instructions, though. Here's the log files' contents:

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

That looks good. Can you please try Windows updater again? If it fails please let me know the error code.

Alex

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Hey Alex,

Still didn't work. This time, this is the error that appeared: code 80073701.

I've looked it up a bit, and it gives me a few suggestions, such as running checksur.exe, uninstalling language packs, and updating Windows installation. I don't want to try anything on my own, so not to spoil your diagnosis.

I'll wait for your instructions, then.

Thanks,

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator

  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Hi,

That didn't work as well as I expected. After running SFC /SCANNOW I got the following message on the CMD prompt:

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

After that I proceeded to paste the command on the Start menu search box:

cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

when I hit Enter, a CMD window simply flashed briefly, and nothing else happened. No CBS.txt file appeared on my desktop.

I executed the entire process twice, and got the same result. I tried to open the cbs.log file directly from the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder, but it said access denied.

I'll wait for the next steps now.

Thanks,

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Try this please.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Ok, here we go. The entire CBS folder compressed.

Thanks,

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Hey Alex,

Thanks for following up. Here are the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log contents, and the link to the CBS.txt file. The copy command didn't work this time either, but I copied cbs.log file and renamed it to .txt.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36988815/CBS.txt

Let me know what the next steps should be.

Thanks,

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Hello again,

I was hoping SURT would of replaced that file, looks like we will have to do it manually.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Please run SFC again and post the CBS log again.

Thanks

Alex

That worked :), the files are not showing as corrupt anymore. Can you please try and update Windows again?

Alex

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Hey Alex,

Still no success. :(

Windows Update found an error again: Code 80073701

Any other ideas?

In order to save time, I've attached the Windows Update log. Hope it helps.

Thanks for looking into this.

Cheers,

This might be a bit of trial and error....

Can you boot into the recovery environment, and launch command prompt please: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt

First command to enter is wmic logicaldisk get name. you will be given a similar output to:

Code:
X:\Sources>wmic logicaldisk get name
Name
C:
D:
E:
X:

Now when you are in the RE the drive letters will often move around. start with the first letter that was provided in the list and enter in the following command (for this example we will use C:\ as it is the first one)

dir C:\
-This will display all the folders in the root drive of C

Can you see a folder called C:\Windows in list?
-If you can see C:\Windows then run the DISM command as DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

If you can not see the Windows folder move onto the next Drive letter that we obtained with wmic logicaldisk get name and type in dir <DRIVE LETTER> (replace <DRIVE LETTER> with the drive you would like to check), can you see the Windows Folder?
-If yes, enter in the following command DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions and changed the C to what ever Drive letter has the Windows folder

Its just a case of going through each drive letter that was produced from the first list until the Windows folder is found then run the DISM command on that drive

Re: Unable to install SP1 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Hi,

I think that may not have worked as planned. I got a weird message saying the scratch directory size was insufficient. I've attached a screenshot.

In any case, I tried reinstalling SP1 and got the same error. Here's the Windows Update log file as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36988815/WindowsUpdate.txt
