Hello, I urgently need to update windows 7 sp1 to windows 10. When I update it often indicates an error 8007370b .... other times it keeps searching endlessly. I've tried various tools but I really need your help. Thank you. Paolo

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them.

Hi paolo69,

I've been looking though your logs, and they show that you have quite a lot of corrupted Registry entries. This is often a sign of failing hardware.

Have you recently replaced any failing RAM or Drives ?

If not, then we need to run some tests on them, to check whether they are "sound" or not.

Please follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.

  • Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
  • Attach this log to your next reply.

Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Please Note ... if the file is too big to upload to your next post, please upload via a file sharing service of your choice and provide the link in your next reply

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service.

Please post me the link to the file.

Examples of services to upload to are ... WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Your Components hive has severe corruption.

Do you have a system image or full backup that you can restore to ?

thanks for the reply .... i have daily backups done with acronis. What could be done?

Since you have backups, then what we need to find out is whether you have one that was made prior to the corruptions in your Components Hive occurring.

Since we don't really know exactly when they happened, there's going to be a little trial and error involved, before we find what we need (if it is indeed possible).

So, what I need you to do, is following the instructions in the following article .... Acronis True Image 2021: how to restore files from a backup (Windows) | Knowledge Base .... to get a copy of your Components Hive that was made when the backup was created.

  • Go to a backup that was made prior to when you think your problems started
  • Click Recovery
  • Select Files
  • Recover the file ... C:\Windows\System32\Config\Components ... to your Desktop.
  • Right click on it and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  • Upload the zipped file to a file sharing service, as you did earlier
  • Post me a link to the file

I'll then analyse it, to determine whether it's one we can use, and if not, we'll have to try again with an earlier backup.

Looking at the file now, back as soon as I've finished analysing it.

The Components Hive you have just posted a link to is from a Windows 10 machine ...

10.0.19041.1220 (WinBuild.160101.0800)

We're working on your Windows 7 SP1 machine ...

6.1.7601.23505 (win7sp1_ldr.160722-0600)

.... and that's the machine we need a backup Components Hive from.

We cannot use the Hive from another machine.

Downloaded a copy of this Components file, back as soon as I've finished analysing it.

Do you have a backup that's not as old as that one ?

It's over 3 years old.

Can you upload the Components file from the earliest of your very recent backups, it's probably going to be corrupted, but we might as well check and make sure, because if it's not it will give us the best chance of restoring things back to "normal".

Keep in mind that my goal is to install windows 10 without losing programs and data (now the update freezes)
