I guess I'll have to surrender and do a windows rewrite.

Apparently my computer had locked itself into a read-only mode because no matter what I do, it won't reset or let me do anything with it.

Please assure me there's a way to "reset" windows without a full rewrite.

Edit: It started with itunes but now a lot of my software is acting like I have no permissions to access anything, I can browser the folders and see the files but I can't use them.

You don't think my 360 extender did this do you guys?

itunes + windows = at best, slow, at worst, maybe what you have.

i'd try the kaspersky self-booting av disk (free) to see if you have malware - often that will kill enough of it to allow you to boot your o.s. to finish cleanup from your windows desktop.

at that point uninstall itunes & the residuals it leaves behind - will see if i can find my step-by-step itune residual remover.

just for sh 1ts and giggles, id run adwcleaner.exe and jrt.exe and tfc.exe - followed by a complete scan with malware bytes (mbam).

also, somewhere in there, boot into safe mode w command prompt and run chkdsk c: /f /r (yes, i know what you may post about using both flags...)

if that all fails,
boot into windows 7 (not safe mode) put the win 7 dvd in the player, and run setup from within windows -
theres a way to do a refresh that does not destroy your files or mess up your installed programs.

failing that... sigh... backup your stuff, drop the partition on c: and do a clean install.

edit - added "in" and "l" somewhere in the text for readability - bonus points if you figgur where...

Thanks, Temmu.

After talking it out with my parents I'm gonna scrap this computer soon, (it's nice having a wonderful income. :smile9:)

As for itunes, I used to like it becuase of ease of file management, but now I'm using other software for my entertainment. (Windows media player, Winamp, and for my ipod, Media Monkey.)

As for malware, everything tested A-OK. So with that being said, I think I'm dealing with a registry glitch from the 360 Extender.

you can do that in-place install i described by running windows, and running setup from the dvd ...

or uninstall whatever 360 extender is?

also, you can install "revo uninstaller" to uninstall the 360 extender, and choose advance mode and it will delete all traces of it from the registry.

The xbox 360 extender is a software extension so that the 360 can see windows media center on the computer its connected to.

This is a diskless oem computer. Its not worth the time to repair. Its going in the trash anyways.
