We have 6 windows updates that have been failing for months.

KB3042058
KB3126587
KB3126593
KB3068708
KB3080079
KB3080149

We have tried downloading and manually installing them. SFC has been run and reported errors. SFCfix has been run and we get first had 2 files found and then fixed:

Attached is the CBS.log file (I erased it last week before working on updates as it was 47meg).

It would be amazing if someone could help!
Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's see if we can get you fixed up. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

OK, we need to replace 36 files. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Fix Corrupt/Missing Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing a folder Packages
  5. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder. If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  6. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  7. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

All 6 updates installed.
I can see now that their were corrupt files logged, could I please ask where you got these replacement/missing files from?
Extracted from windows updates?
I only ask as we have a few more computers with similar numbers of failed updates and dont want to bother someone each time?

Thanks in advance

I have several VMs set up for each OS and I usually try to extract them from here first as I know they are clean and good. If I can't find them on my VMs then I hunt down the KB update and extract the files from within the update.

I'm glad it worked. Take care!

Thanks again. Can I pleae ask a bit of further advice?

On several other machines which were failing with simular errors (The room main power was being shutdown for months without us knowing), i managed to extract the required/failing updates or use some of the files in your above pack.zip and resolve other machines that were failing. But for some of the .mum files needed i could only find files with the same name but also had XXXXX_sp1_XXXXXX within the file names, or XXXX_RTM_XXXX where as the Check SUR didnt reference sp1 or rtm.

For example, in the extract or on other machines, i cant find the following?
Package_for_KB3042058~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.cat

Ive also found some machines with Zeroed manifest files... Ive found the replacement files on other computers but i cant replace them as they are in use.
Does a service needs stopped or something or is there more to it?

Thanks in advance, hopefully if i can get my head around it i can resolve the rest without asking for help!

Sure.

If you download and extract the update you will find two files named update.cat and update.mum. Rename these files to Package_for_KB3042058~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.cat and Package_for_KB3042058~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.mum respectively and you should be good. We have an acadamy here where we teach this stuff and the reasons why, etc. But in this instance you should be able to do this.

Ive also found some machines with Zeroed manifest files... Ive found the replacement files on other computers but i cant replace them as they are in use.

Assuming the machines in question are Windows 7/Vista then you should always place the good copies of the manifests in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests and then run the System Update Readiness Tool again which will handle the permissions/replacements, etc.

Hope this helps and good luck.
