Hi,

I came across the following article after trying to find a solution for my server rebooting problem and it is pretty much the same issue.

I end up going into safe mode and disable the 'Windows Installer' service then I can get into the server again but I'm not successfully getting windows updates applied.

Attached are the files requested, any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Marc

Hi @Souk,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

Download

SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the server and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Here are the results, I've scheduled a server reboot to run over night. Thank you for your assistance I hope this will fix the rebooting issue!

Great, let me know the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Hey Maxstar,

I was able to schedule a reboot during the day but unfortunately the server still did the constant reboot. I had to go into safe mode and set the 'Windows Modules Installer' startup to disabled to break the reboot cycle again. The odd thing is that I now see that it looks like it did install the latest CU for the server and Windows Update says that I'm up to date. I attached the CBS logs again, maybe there are multiple things going on here.

Thanks,
Marc

Hi,

I would first test if this Server goes into a reboot cycle too when there are no update pending.

I tried another reboot and it is working properly again. Thank you for your help, you're amazing!

Hi,

You're welcome. When you have the same reboot issue with the upcoming updates, please let me know.

Good Morning Maxstar,
Just an update with the latest Windows updates. The monthly updates said they installed and then after rebooting it was back in a reboot cycle. It would boot to 'getting windows ready don't turn off your computer' stage, the spinning circle would be there for a bit and then it would say shutting down services and then reboot. I let this go on 4-5 times and then decided to go into safe mode and disable the Windows Modules Installer service to break the cycle. After rebooting into normal mode I checked Windows Updates and saw the CU was saying it was pending a restart, I rebooted with the service still disabled and things were no different. I left it like that and then checked back this morning, the CU is not showing as a pending restart or as an available update to install. I looked at the update history and the only installed update that shows from yesterday is the .NET Framework CU but not the server CU. It looks like things still are not working and I'm not sure if the update is actually installed at this point. I also set the service back to manual and started it, but no difference in behaviour. No idea why the pending update/restart disappeared on it's own, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marc

Hi,

Please provide the CBS to look at.

Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply. If the file is too large to attach, upload the CBS.zip file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Provide also a new copy of the COMPONENTS hive.

  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Good Morning Maxstar,

Here is the SFCFix text file and DISM ran successfully

DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.20348.2849

Image Version: 10.0.20348.3091

[==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.
The operation completed successfully.

If I check for updates it says I'm up to date. If I check the update history it doesn't show the server CU as installed.

Should I reboot when I have a chance or wait to see what happens with next months updates?

Thanks,
Marc

Hi,

I would wait for the next Cumulative Update to see if the system can reboot normally after installing.

Hey Maxstar,

Forgot to give you an update for February's updates. The updates ran but still had the reboot cycle which I had to break in safe mode but it did show the update as installed in the history. There was also an update to our security product a week or so later that required a reboot and it worked fine with no reboot cycle. It's not a huge deal, I'm more happy that the updates are being applied but will let you know what happens with this months updates.

Thanks,
Marc
